“What’s happened?” I demanded, clutching Calamity’s cut.

“Two uniforms just dragged Klutz from the alley, beaten to shit, and threw him in the back of a cop car!” Blaze announced loudly as Ramirez approached.

Ramirez swapped glances with Ben and then jogged out with Bobby Lucas, Dan Horton, Nando, and Goldberg on his heels.

Everyone began following as I leapt into an SUV with Ramirez. Nobody said a word as Ben hopped in the back and, sirens blaring, drove us to the station. Ramirez and Ben stormed in with me behind them, and the officer on the desk jumped up.

“A man called Jacon Edwards was just arrested at the back of Bernard’s Restaurant. Where is he?” Ramirez pressed.

“No one by that name was brought in,” the officer replied, checking logs quickly.

Ramirez frowned, walked around the desk, and checked himself.

“Check who was near Bernard’s and get the chief immediately. There’s a problem,” Ramirez stated.

“Tonio, what’s going on?” I demanded as people arrived from the wedding.

Klutz’s exiled brothers all pushed themselves to the front.

“I don’t know. Klutz hasn’t been brought here. Jett, are you sure it was cops?” Ramirez asked. Both Ramirez and Ben listened intently as Jett described the two of them.

“That is Haynes and Zucker. What is going on?” a man demanded, and we peered up as the Chief of Police, Andrew Howser, arrived.

Ramirez took him to one side and explained while motioning at me. Howser’s face displayed no emotions as he glanced across several times. I saw some of Hawthorne’s leaving, followed by the Juno Group.

“They’re going hunting. Come, sit down,” Artemis said, gently leading me to a chair. I stared in shock and disbelief. Klutz had only gone to check the bikes. This was our wedding day. How could this be happening? What were those two cops doing with my husband?

“Aurora, Klutz hasn’t been brought to the station. The chief has ordered them to be contacted and has demanded they return, but they aren’t answering their radios. He’s putting officers out looking for them,” Ramirez said gently.

“Why did they take him? Klutz wouldn’t have fought with them? Why didn’t they come into the restaurant and check with you guys?” I asked, tears running down my face.

“All good questions, Mrs Edwards. And I can assure you we’ll get answers,” Chief Howser responded.

We paced back and forth for the next hour while I sat surrounded by the old ladies. Finally, a bellow echoed from the rear of the station, and we all jumped. Ramirez was being manhandled by Ben and Nando and shoved backwards.

“I’ll end your careers. You’ll be pond scum by the time I’ve finished!” Ramirez roared.

A swaggering uniformed cop followed.

“What’s your damn problem? Ramirez, we picked an asshole up off the street and brought him here!”

“Fucking lying bastard! We’ve been here an hour. The man is known to us! No way did he attack you!” Ramirez bellowed and broke free. The officer looked scared as Ramirez barrelled towards him and let rip with a right hook that knocked him off his feet.

“Holy shit!” Artemis whispered.

Ramirez leapt on top of the cop, and they began fighting. Ramirez landed solid blows to the cop’s face while the officer held his arms up and screeched. Nando and Ben let him land a few more punches before hauling Ramirez off.

“I’ll have your badge!” the cop yelled.

“No more than I’ll have your career. You’re fucked. Witnesses noted what time you arrested Klutz and came straight here. The chief’s been calling your radio, and you’ve had Klutz for an hour!” Ramirez spat, and the cop’s swagger faded somewhat.

“You know that crazy piece of trash? We found him like that and brought him here,” the cop sneered.

“Yeah, we know him, and so does the chief. Your stories are bullshit! You picked the wrong man of colour to mess with, you racist piece of shit!” Ramirez roared, struggling to get free.

“Ramirez, stand down! Nando, arrest those two on suspicion of assault, battery, and hate crimes. Mrs Edwards, come with me, please; an ambulance is on its way!” Chief Howser declared.

I paled and wobbled as I got to my feet, and the cop suddenly realised everyone was here for Klutz.
