“Klutz?” Aurora asked, and I realised I’d got lost in my thoughts.

“Sorry, baby. I don’t know what this means. And I’m not gonna lie, I’m worried. And also tired of you feeling guilty. Just because you didn’t see what happened to me doesn’t mean you are to blame.”

“Klutz, the sight let me down, and it’s never done that!” Aurora exclaimed, and I saw the guilt torturing her.

“Stop, babe, please for me. There’s no need to be guilty, and I refuse to let that shit consume us. Yeah, you didn’t see it, but you’re not God. And God preaches free will, too, remember? Aurora, you didn’t take two white supremacists into the force, nor did you make them attack me. There is nothing to feel responsible about. And this will not affect our marriage, sweetness, because I’m as madly in love with you as the day you first caught my attention.”

Aurora sighed and laid her head on my shoulder.

“Klutz, I’ll work on it. But now I’m worried about this message. Is somebody targeting us?”

“Don’t know, honey, but don’t go anywhere alone!” I warned, and Aurora nodded.

Aurora

The following week, I kept my promise to Klutz and went nowhere alone. Someone was always with me, and I didn’t complain. Therefore, I was alert but wary when someone knocked on the door. Klutz had just left for Calamity and Rosie’s after Rosie had called and said that Calamity was sinking deep into depression. I’d told Klutz to go because I knew Klutz needed Calamity, whole and healthy. He, Calamity, and Fanatic would be friends for life. When one hurt, the other two did. And Klutz could be brutal when needed.

When I peered through the spyhole, I was surprised but not concerned when I saw a police officer standing outside.

I opened the door, keeping it on the chain.

“Is everything okay?”

“Mrs Aurora Edwards?” the guy asked, squinting.

“Yes,” I replied.

The officer lifted a foot and slammed it into the door without another word. I screamed and threw my weight behind it as the cop smashed his entire body into it. I was shoved back, and the chain broke. The man stormed into the house, caught me by the hair, swung me around, and pushed me into the wall. My face hit first, and I screeched in pain as the cop quickly searched me for weapons.

“Fuckin’ cunt!” the officer spat as he slammed me into the wall again.

“What the hell are you doing?” I yelled.

“Your husband sent my brother to prison. Now, payback’s a bitch!” the man hissed in my ear as his body pinned mine against the wall. Hands groped my ass, and I stiffened, fear of being raped prevalent in my mind.

“You will lose your job for this!”

“You’ll have to be alive to testify!” the cop whispered.

For a moment, I hesitated, and then some lessons I’d had from Artemis erupted into my turbulent thoughts. Without a word, I slammed my head into his nose, simultaneously lifting my foot, slamming it on his, and shoving my elbow into his ribs. The cop fell back, and I broke free and dashed for the kitchen. He roared and gave chase as I flew towards the counter, picked up the first knife, and threw it. The officer ducked behind the door, giving me enough time to pull the gun from the drawer where Klutz kept one for safety.

I yanked my arm up and took aim as the cop appeared, his weapon in hand. We stared at each other in a standoff, and he smirked.

“Go on, shoot!” he hissed.

I shook my head.

“I don’t want to hurt you. Just leave!”

“Too late. If I leave you alive, you’ll bang me inside too. Time to die, bitch,” the cop said, and I saw his uniform read Haynes. Haynes raised the gun slightly, and his finger squeezed. At the same time, so did mine. Two loud gunshots echoed, and I felt a jarring pain as Haynes stared with disbelief. He hadn’t thought I would pull the trigger. Well, I had. A red spot appeared on his uniform shirt and spread. Slowly Hayne fell to his knees and then face-planted forward.

Meanwhile, I slid down the cupboards, still holding the gun as pain stretched through my shoulder. I was bleeding and understood I was in shock. Shit, I’d just killed a man, an officer of the law, no less. In horror, I watched as the blood leaked out from his body and pooled. Who knew the human body held so much blood?

I should phone Klutz but was so shocked I couldn’t move. Not even to stop my bleeding. Minutes ticked past, and I remained where I was, still holding the gun on Haynes. I wasn’t sure if Haynes was dead and if the asshole moved, I wanted to be in a position to shoot him.

“Aurora! Aurora Victoria!” a voice bellowed, and I turned my head slowly.

Hunter burst into the kitchen, fear all over his face.
