Nando tilted his head at Goldberg.

“Give you five minutes, baby,” Nando said, and I nodded frantically as I clutched both Casey and Klutz tightly.

Eric Benjamin.

I raced after my partner as Ramirez strode into the ER and saw a wall of officers. A definite split was happening in the waiting room. One side was lined with several cops, the other with the exiled Rage brothers and their old ladies. Crap, this was a shitstorm waiting to break.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” Ramirez demanded of a uniform called Irons.

“Waiting for justice. Bitch shot a cop, so we’re waiting to cart her out in cuffs,” Irons sneered at Ramirez.

Ramirez bristled, and this shitstorm went tits up.

“Highly doubt Mrs Edwards will be arrested. Looks like self-defence to me,” Ramirez spat. His shoulders squared, and I recognised that stance. The man I thought of as family was ready to throw down and didn’t give a shit if this time he lost his shield over it.

“Bitch shot an officer. That makes her a cop killer,” another guy replied. Mark Tobias. Truthfully, I was surprised to see him here, as he was a decent officer.

“I said self-defence. There’s her front door kicked in, her blood on the wall where it appears her head was smashed against it. Strands of her hair where it’s been yanked out, and then a dead cop in her kitchen, and she took a bullet. What does that sound like to you?” Ramirez bellowed at the waiting cops.

Several of them swapped glances.

“What you talking about, Ramirez?” Tobias demanded, looking confused.

“Just what I told you. Haynes went after Mrs Edwards and attacked her. Have any of you fuckheads wondered why Haynes was at her home? The house of a man whose brother is accused of beating half to death?” Ramirez asked, stepping forward.

I noticed a movement and saw the exiles of Rage moving into position to protect Ramirez, should it be called for. Loyal motherfuckers they were.

“Bitch lured him there. They’re after lawsuits or some shit,” Irons snapped.

“Cunt shot Haynes at point-blank range outside!” Vic Arch shouted.

“Hayes was shot in her kitchen with strands of her hair still wrapped in his fingers!” Ramirez retorted.

Arch and Tobias swapped glances.

“That ain’t what Irons said,” Tobias answered slowly.

“Oh, no? And what exactly did Irons say?” Ramirez drawled.

I saw the violence building up in him and guessed he was going to swing for someone.

“That Haynes was shot outside her home, and she attacked him.”

“Bullshit, and you all just jumped on the bandwagon and came here to persecute an innocent girl? A victim of police brutality and racism?” Ramirez fired back.

Shame crossed some of the cop’s faces as they moved towards the exit, sending Irons a dirty look.

“Fucking dirty spic!” Irons spat, and everyone stopped moving.

Ramirez twisted his head to offer a death stare to Irons, who’d paled as he realised how many witnesses were present. Ramirez’s fist curled, and I stepped forward.

“Stop, Tonio, you can’t handle another suspension,” I said with a grin. “But I can. That dirty spic is my partner, asshole.” And with that, I let loose a right hook that sent Irons flying backwards. I followed up with several torso shots and then one to the face that knocked him out. Casually, I wiped my hands on my pants and turned to the watching crowd.

“Fuck me, the cop has balls after all,” Jett teased with a smile.

I rolled my eyes and then faced Ramirez.

“Suppose I better call chief,” I said with a shrug.
