It was to impress my boss.

“Hello,” I said. “I’m Laurel Hamm, and I think I’m in the right place. This is the flight that’s for Florida, yes?”

“It is,” the tall, dark, and handsome stranger replied. “And I am your captain, Greyson Holt. But feel free to call me Grey.”

“Thank you, Captain,” she replied. “I trust we’re ready to go. I don’t know how much of the schedule was shared ahead with you, but I don’t have a lot of time, and I would love to be in the air sooner rather than later.”

“As you wish,” Greyson said. “My mechanic here has just told me that we are ready to fly, so if this is all you have with you, I think we can get settled.”

“I travel light,” I replied. “Is it alright for me to bring a carryon?”

“Of course,” Greyson replied. I wasn’t sure what else I would have done with the bag, so I was relieved when he wasn’t at all worried about me bringing it with me onto the plane. There must be a storage bay somewhere, but it wasn’t a very big plane, and I didn’t want to wait any longer for us to be in the air than what I was already.

It was nice to see that the plane had been prepped and was ready to go, but that was just the start. I knew travel was unpredictable, and there was always the chance that something was going to go wrong and slow me down. I was set to meet with Mr. Weir early on that afternoon, and I wanted to get going as soon as we could to make sure I wasn’t late for that meeting.

If there was one thing I felt was the most unprofessional thing I could do, it was to meet up with someone late. And with the pressure that was on me with Mr. Weir, I didn’t want to be even a second past when we had agreed to meet up with each other.

I wasn’t the one who had put together the schedule, but that didn’t really matter when it came to the time he kept. He was the sort of man who had his people calling other people’s people, and he intended for them to follow the schedule that was put into place by those people.

I was one of the people who had to work to make this happen, so I was already feeling the pressure to be up in the air as soon as we could be. But, it was difficult for me to not want to stand there and talk for a few minutes with the captain before we boarded the plane, too.

He was so good looking, and I could tell with the way he and his friend gave each other that glance before I got onto the plane that they were friends. It was a casual sort of atmosphere that I enjoyed, and I wondered if it would help put my mind at ease before we got up in the air.

But, I didn’t have the time to talk.

I had to get going.

“Alright then, let’s get this party started, shall we?” the captain said as he climbed onto the plane behind me. “You are the one and only passenger on this flight, so consider yourself a VIP. I apologize. I’m going to be a little too focused on the air and keeping the plane up there to be able to do much entertaining, so I trust you’ll be able to keep yourself busy while we’re in the air?”

“Don’t worry about me,” I said. I knew I was being cold, but I was okay with that.

I wasn’t here to make friends.

“Great,” he replied. His tone told me that he wasn’t offended with what I’d just said, but I couldn’t help but feel like I had come off rude.

But, if I had, he didn’t say anything about it. He just strapped himself into the cockpit and started with his routine announcements before he drove the plane toward the runway.

I ignored him during the announcements and continued to give him the cold shoulder the duration of the flight. But, I had to admit that he was smooth with his skills in the air, and I hardly felt a bit of turbulence the entire flight.

By the time we were being put down in Florida, I couldn’t express how happy I was with the flight or the entire experience. But, I wasn’t going to gush over him despite the fact I wanted to. He was too hot for that. I could barely look at him without blushing, and I was bound to say something stupid.

“Thank you,” I said on my way out the door. “I appreciate your service.”

“Not a problem,” he said with a grin. “I’ll be seeing you as soon as you’re ready to be back in the air. Stick to the schedule, or feel free to give me a call when you need. My number should be on the bottom of your ticket, but here, I’ll give it to you directly now to make sure you have it.”

“Thank you,” I said as I took the piece of paper with his number scrawled on it. I knew he was doing this for me to have it in case we had to pull out of the city early, but I couldn’t ignore the rush that ran through me when I slid the paper into my purse.

He was charming, I would give him that, and I was glad to now have his number.

I could control myself right now, and I would use this only for business purposes. But, it wouldn’t hurt to tell Naomi that I had gotten a hot guy’s number so soon after she and I were talking about what I was doing with my life these days.

Perhaps there was a little more going on in my mind than focusing on work alone.

What was the hurt in fantasizing about this guy anyway? It wasn’t like it was going to lead to anything. I knew that, and I was okay with that.

At least, that’s what I would continue to tell myself.

But, all thoughts of the hot pilot went straight out the window when I got to the hotel.
