He laughed on the other end of the line, and I joined in, though I wasn’t sure what was funny. I didn’t want her to feel as though I was following her or stalking her, but I wasn’t sure how much of what I was told was also shared with the other workers on this team.

That’s what we were really starting to feel like. A team. Though with how Laurel had been so cold and distant toward me all day, I wasn’t sure she was going to be too happy with the idea of the two of us being on any sort of team, even if it was just as simple as me being available to her for giving her a quick flight to another location.

On the other hand, this could be a way for me to help break the ice with her a little more. I was already glad to be spending the next few months working with her, and I didn’t want her to feel that she had to be so cold and distant toward me in our professional interaction.

Still, those weren’t things I was going to go into while I still had this man on the phone. He wanted to put me back through to the secretary, and I would talk to her about all the little details he and I just discussed. I wanted to ask him if he thought it would be faster to just work things out with him, but then, he would have to talk to her anyway, I was sure, and I didn’t want to have to repeat myself more than once.

So, I agreed to anything he asked me to do, and by the time I was put back through to Sam, their secretary, I felt that I had won the lottery with this deal. Not only was I working, but I was working on a part time basis. Sure, I was going to have to fly whenever she wanted, but if she was going to be mainly going back and forth between these two states, then there was little for me to really do outside of hanging around and waiting for her to be ready to go.

If only there was a way for me to call up Kenton and tell him how good this trip was going so far. But, he didn’t have a phone, and I was going to have to wait to get to talk to him until I was back in New York.

It would lead to a great story, I knew that. Especially after he was teasing me with all his karma jokes that morning.

But, I pushed him out of my head after I hung up the phone. It was all set. I decided I would stop at some store on the way to the hotel to buy a couple changes of clothes for the time I was in Florida, then I would go settle into my room.

I was elated to see that there was a bar at the hotel by the time I arrived that night, and I had to admit, I was even happier to see Laurel herself was there.

She did look like she had had the day from hell, however, so I acted fast.

A pretty girl like that wasn’t going to be sitting alone for very long. Not in a place like this. If I wanted the chance to get to talk to her, I was going to have to do it now.

I ordered myself a drink from the bar, then asked the bartender for another.

“I’m going to treat my friend over there,” I said with a smile, tipping the young woman well. I grabbed both drinks and headed over to the table, eager to talk to Laurel about the day. Leroy had told me he was going to let her know I would be staying at the same hotel, so I hoped he’d already done that as I walked in her direction.

She looked up, and to my surprise, she smiled.

“Thought you looked like you could use a drink,” I said with a smile as I set it down.

“My hero,” she said.

Her tone was sarcastic, but I had to admit, I liked the sound of that.

Maybe this was a better idea than I originally thought.

“I don’t know, there are just times in my job when I feel like the people I’m working with expect me to be able to create the things they have going on in their brains. Like, I don’t mean pull off the design, but like they really want me to wave my little magic wand in the air, and they can somehow get whatever it is they have in mind with nothing to it,” I explained.

Greyson nodded as I spoke, and I got the impression he really was listening to me, which was nice. I had been out with plenty of guys who I thought were interested in what I had to say, but who wound up just sitting and talking about themselves all night long.

Or who immediately lost interest in what I was saying as soon as I started talking about the fact that I had a job or anything remotely close to that. There were plenty of them around it seemed, and I apparently had the bad luck to go out with all of them.

Not that this was a date of any sorts, but the fact that Greyson was stuck with me was enough for me to feel like I should at least be able to talk to him about what was going on with the project.

That hadn’t been a welcome call, either, but I wasn’t about to argue with Leroy when he told me that he wanted me to have a personal pilot who was there for anything I might need whenever I needed it. Of course, he meant anything I would need when it came to flying out of there, but he followed it up with telling me that he had told Greyson to stay with me at the hotel.

The very same hotel where I would be staying while I went through with the design project.

And that could take a while.

We had already booked him for the next few months for me to fly back and forth from New York City to Florida at will, but to have him stuck here with me meant that he was going to be a lot more restricted in the schedule than before, and that made me feel like I ought to be a little more open and polite with him than I had been initially.

Not that this was going to lead to anything more, but when he walked over across the bar and handed me the drink, I was glad that the man who approached me was at least the same guy who was being paid to hang out where I was during the next few months. That made me feel a lot better than if I had to deal with a guy who was going to be trying to get me to come back up to his room with him.

“So you mean that you can’t just make up the pieces that we want as you go along?” he asked with a shake of his head. “And here I thought when you became an interior designer, you just happened to build all the pieces that were needed to make something incredible in the back room or something. I didn’t know you had to work with what was already available.”
