Or, worse, that he had slept with me and taken my virginity, now I was going to do my best to make sure he was with me forever. Both of those were the cringiest ways of doing anything, and I didn’t want to put him in a position that made him feel like I was going to have expectations from what we were doing.

I had to keep in mind that we had made an agreement that this wasn’t going to change anything, and I knew it was in my own best interest to not read into the little things he was doing for me. Or even the bigger things, for that matter. If he was going to rent a car to take me to this restaurant, that was amazing, but I couldn’t lose my head over it.

I had to be smart, level-headed, and focused.

Even if he was the most amazing man in the world, and he was the first man who had ever done anything even remotely so nice for me.

This was fun, for now, but I was going to be careful with his heart as well as my own. There was no need to get lost in the passion of the moment, or to assume that things were going to be forever when I had no idea how long it would last.

I could be smart about this.

In fact, I was being smart about this. I was making sure not to lose myself even though I wasn’t able to get him out of my head. I just couldn’t let that happen.

But, there was another part of me that really hoped work would go by fast tomorrow.

And it was the first time in my life I had ever felt that way.

SEVENTEEN

Greyson

I had a much morerelaxed day than any of the days I spent in Florida.

But, that may have been for the simple fact that I knew what I was doing in California. I had been here several times, and I liked it. Not as much as I liked New York, but I knew the things around the city that I liked to do here, and with the main goal of my day being to get a car to rent that night, it was an easy enough day for me to not have to run around very much.

There was part of me that wanted to go with Laurel when she left the hotel that morning. She told me she was going to look at the new location, and she would see how much of it was the same as the place back in Florida, and how much of it she was going to have to do herself.

I was interested to see how she was going to combine the similarities of the two along with making the hotel here feel far more Cali than the other one, but I figured I would get to see plenty of pictures when she was done with the design.

At least, I would ask her to show me.

I liked seeing what she did with her time. I found so many things about her to be absolutely fascinating. Not only was it incredibly impressive that she had flown the plane on the way over to Cali, but I couldn’t get it out of my head that she was willing to just get into a car and head down toward the boarder with me to some restaurant that she’d never heard of before.

She was a daredevil, that was certain.

There were plenty of girls I had gone out with in the past who wouldn’t even want me to go with them back to their homes after we had been going out for a while because they didn’t want me to know where they lived, and without that trust even starting in the beginning, I knew there was no way we would ever be able to make a relationship work.

But, that wasn’t the way things went with Laurel.

She was the kind of girl I knew would trust me with anything already.

But, she wasn’t at all naïve, nor was she irresponsible.

She just knew how she wanted to do things, and she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. Of course, I was sure with how much traveling she did for her job that wasn’t a big deal to her anymore, but the fact she was so willing to just go with me was a massive turn-on.

I couldn’t wait to take her to the restaurant that night, and I was checking my phone to see if she had texted me before it was even past one in the afternoon.

I knew she was going to be busy most of the day. She had work come first. And of course it should. The entire reason we were here was because of her work. I had flown her out this way because she was doing the hotel design. Otherwise, I wouldn’t even be here right now.

So, if she was going to spend the whole day down at the other hotel, that was fine with me. I just wanted the chance to be able to take her to dinner when she finally did have the chance, though I wasn’t able to make reservations with the restaurant for the mere fact that I wasn’t sure when she was going to be done with her work for the day, and I didn’t want to make reservations that we had to cancel.

Or, worse, didn’t show up for.

No, I wanted this to be the best experience, and for that to happen, I knew I had to make sure we didn’t do anything that caused the restaurant to lose money, or that caused them to wait for us when we didn’t show up at the right time.

It was around three in the afternoon when I got the text from Laurel telling me she was done. I wasn’t ever big on texting, so I called her back.

“You’re done already?” I asked her in surprise.
