“I know,” I said. “But if you’re willing to take that pay cut, I can give you some special privileges.”

She laughed again and shook her head. “Or maybe you would be the one who was getting the special privileges with me.”

“Every day I get to spend with you is a privilege,” I told her. She blushed, and I smiled. I was glad that I still had the power to make her blush with just a few words, and I hoped that I would forever be able to do that to her. I knew she liked it when I made her blush, and I was happy to do it.

I always felt on top of the world knowing that I was the one who did that to her, and I felt it was a good sign for the growth of our relationship.

We had worked hard over the past month with getting to know each other on every level. We talked about the things that were hard for us to talk about, we talked about our hopes and dreams. We talked about what would happen if one of us were to be hurt or sick, and we talked about what we would do if we did get pregnant and she was going to have a baby.

By the time we got back to New York, I was pretty sure we had talked about everything there was for us to discuss, and that I knew her better than anyone else in the world. We were constantly doing what we could to get to know each other better, and I was okay with that. I even told her if she changed her mind on anything to let me know that, too.

“Because you are free to change your mind any time you want, and if that happens, I want you to let me know what you think now so that I can keep up with you,” I told her. “I don’t want you to get into the habit of thinking that since you said something once, you have to have that opinion forever.”

“Deal,” she said. “But only as long as you are willing to do the same.”

“Deal,” I replied.

“It’s weird that this is the last time I’m going to be leaving the plane,” Laurel commented as she grabbed her bags and headed for the door. “It’s like this place has become the second home to me in all the hotels that we went to over the past few months. Like, this was the one thing that stayed constant with me throughout the entire thing, besides you anyway.”

“I feel that way about the plane even when I am home,” I admitted. “I mean, I move from apartment to apartment, and I might wind up sleeping in my car now and then, but nothing feels as at home as this plane. At least, I could say that before I met you.”

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“I mean now that you and I are together, I feel like home is wherever you are. I don’t care if we have to live in a mud hut in the middle of the jungle. As long as you are with me, I’m home,” I told her.

She blushed again, then stood on the tips of her toes and kissed me.

“I guess I better open up the door and let you out, huh?” I asked. “I almost don’t want to. It’s like when I open it up, we have to get back to real life, and that comes with responsibilities and drama and stress. I would rather be locked in here with you forever, and we wouldn’t have to worry about any of that.”

“But we’d starve,” she said with a laugh.

“I’d order something to be delivered,” I said.

“But what about when you ran out of money?” she asked.

“Then we would use yours,” I said.

“I’m pretty sure I would be fired if I didn’t show up to work tomorrow,” she said with a laugh. “I mean, I’m not sure how it’s going to go anyway, but if I come in late or not at all, I can’t see how Leroy is going to do anything sensible.”

“It seems like he likes to overreact before he does something,” I said.

“Like some other people I’ve known,” she teased me.

“Alright, alright, that’s fair,” I said. “But I’m working on it at least.”

“I know you are, I’m just teasing,” Laurel replied. “I think that’s my Uber.”

“You ordered one already?” I asked in surprise.

“I wanted to get back to the office and talk to my boss as soon as possible,” she said. “I know he wants me to come in in the morning, but I want to talk to him about how things went before then. I guess so I can have some peace of mind tonight knowing if I got the job or not. Otherwise, I’m going to be a mess and not able to sleep, and you know what happens when I lack sleep.”

“You show up to work late.” I laughed. “Alright. I still have to do some maintenance on the plane before I leave, but you get out of here.”

“Sounds good,” she said. “Thank you again for the flight.”

“I was paid to do it,” I replied, and she laughed.

“But you didn’t crash the plane, which I appreciate,” she said.
