Levi sighs, picking up his phone.

“I’m going to need to call my dad. You know there’s going to be some sort of payment needed for a boon this big, right? You’re not initiated yet, so it’s going to be even bigger. Are you prepared to pay the Society their dues?”

I don’t hesitate as I nod. “Absolutely, yes. I’ll do anything for my sister. She’s my last living family member. I don’t include my father in this, after what happened. He’s a waste of space, as far as I’m concerned.”

Levi stands and calls his father while I move to look outside. Everything is dark except for the twinkling lights in the trees. I wouldn’t think a Catholic Academy would allow something like this, but Mother Superior thinks they’re pretty, and functional, because they light the paths at night. I tend to agree, they’re both functional and beautiful.

Levi walks back in, looking angry, confused, and sad.

“Will they let her stay? I’ll do anything,” I beg. I just need her to be safe. Tonight was way too close of a call.

“Yes, but at a very high cost,” Levi says, standing next to me. “You’re being issued your own challenge outside of the normal Adam challenges for initiates. If you want your sister to be able to stay here, the price they demand is your father’s death. It seems he’s angered some very important people, and this is the last straw.”

I blink as I glance at him and then back to the fairy lights again. How can something so pretty also appear so sinister with the appearance of this news.

“I’ll do it.” I answer before I can fully process what this means. I meant when I said, I will do anything for my sister. Who would I be if I folded at the first obstacle in my path?

“You shouldn’t have to do this,” Levi says with a sigh. “We can figure something else out.”

“No,” I tell him, shaking my head. “If this is the only way, then I’ll do it. She’ll be completely protected, right? No bullshit loopholes,” I insist.

Levi shakes his head. “No, man. My father knows this is for your sister. He’d never do anything that would put her in danger.”

Nodding, I continue to watch the pretty twinkling lights, saying the words that are sure to alter my life forever, in unforeseen ways. “Then I’ll do it. Just tell me where and when.”

CHASTITY

Levi watches me intently as I walk into his office. Standing, he holds out his hand for me to take. Hesitantly, I reach out, slipping my hand into his.

“We’re taking our session outside of the office today,” he says, grabbing a bag from his desk.

Brows raised, I dig my heels into the floor as Levi pulls me towards the secret door that leads to the underground

“No, Levi, I don’t want to go there. Please, you promised,” I cry out, panicked.

Levi turns towards me and sighs, curling his palm along my cheek.

“You don’t trust me yet,” he says with a frown. “I promise, this will be nothing like before. Okay, Chastity?”

Chewing on my lip, I look up at him, trying to figure out if I should trust him.

“We’re changing our location because I’m supposed to be in a meeting for the next few hours with teachers. Bastian, Ash, and Jonas tend to come find me on my downtime, and I don’t want to be disturbed while I’m with you. I haven’t informed anyone about our sessions,” he says before he leans in and gives me a gentle kiss.

Tempest knows because I confided in her. I don’t feel ashamed or guilty for telling her because of how confused I’ve felt recently. Levi has been trying too. Today in class, he used Bridget as his verbal punching bag and it was really satisfying to see. He caught her calling me a whore who would go down on someone for a lemon bar, and Levi’s face transformed into anger.

While it’s true I love my lemon bars, performing oral for one is off the table. I’ll make my own, thank you very much.

“Where’d you go just now?” Levi asks with a small smile. Sometimes he has these soft moments, and I have trouble seeing how he’s the same person. Which one is the real Levi? Is he really this complicated?

“I was just thinking about class today and Bridget,” I tell him with a grimace.

“That girl is a menace.” He sighs. “I wish she wasn’t so cruel to you, but I’ll do my best to make her life hell whenever I see her doing it. Will you come with me if I promise you may actually enjoy this punishment? I’m going off script. We’ll still have our sessions, I’ll teach you things about yourself, and in return, you’ll keep an open mind. What do you think? Will you let me make you feel good?”

Levi growls a little at the end and I shiver. How is it so sexy when he does that?

I remember back when I was in his apartment and fell onto his lap. The memory of the way his hand ghosted along my skin makes me nod.

“Yes. I just… don’t want to be a disappointment,” I confess.
