Eli opened his mouth to argue, but I stopped him.

“He’s my father.” There was a bit of pleading in my voice, and Eli released a heavy sigh.

He spun me around, so that we were facing one another. “I know,” he groused. “I just hate that he and my father decided to keep you from me.”

I sighed. “How many times do I have to tell you…”

Eli rolled his eyes. “I know…I know.” He leaned down and pressed his lips to my own. I sighed into the kiss, allowing Eli to coax my lips open. His tongue caressed my own, and I allowed myself to fall deeper into his arms.

“Jesus.” Prue’s voice cut through the passion between the two of us. Eli made a frustrated noise in the back of his throat as he pulled away, and I felt my cheeks flaming as I looked at one of my closest friends. “You two are like rabbits.”

“Go away, Prudence.” Prue was another person Eli didn’t much like, but he tolerated her for me.

Prue ignored him like she normally did. Prue was one of the few people in the world who was not fazed by Eli’s intensity in any way.

“Mr. White wanted me to come and find you. He’d like all of us to talk a little bit about our pieces.”

The butterflies in my stomach started fluttering madly. I knew I would have to talk about my work, but the thought of being vulnerable around so many people made my palms turn sweaty and caused sweat to break out across my neck.

“I’ll be there in a moment.”

Prue gave me an intense look and raised her eyebrows suggestively.

“I swear I’ll be there!”

“You better.”

Eli squeezed my hand. “You are going to be great,” he whispered. “You already are.”

I reached up and pressed my lips to Eli’s cheek. The smell of him calmed my nerves. Eli always calmed me. With him by my side, I felt invincible in a way that I never had before.

“I love you,” I told him. “You make me brave.”

Eli cupped my cheek. “You’ve always been brave,” he told me. “And I love you too.”

Eli came into my life when things were a mess, and though I wouldn’t ever say that he completely healed me, he made me strong. I meant what I said when I told him that he made me brave.

Together, Eli and I could do anything. We already had.

SNEAK PEEK OF MAFIA PRINCESS

“Let’s get your veil on,” my cousin Natalia said in her chipper voice. Natalia attempted a good attitude through all of this, and in any other situation, I’d appreciate her energy. Today, it made the situation even more oppressive. Her happy tone made me want to cry harder than I already was.

I couldn’t stop the tears, no matter how hard I tried, or how many times my mother scolded me.

“Wow,” Natalia said, placing her round face next to mine in the mirror. Her dark hair was in a sleek ponytail, and she looked lovely and happy next to my misery.

“I don’t think lovely covers how beautiful you look, Sasha.”

I tried to smile at her words, but it came out as more of a grimace. In the ornate mirror of the church, my face looked pale. It was clear that I was unhappy.

I had never spent a lot of time thinking about what I would look like when I married, but I had always assumed I would be happy about it.
