Matteo rolled his eyes again. “Who cares? She’s not a threat. Dad would not have allowed her in the house if he was worried.”

Normally, I would agree. “He would have if he thought not paying back that favor would cause more problems.”

“True,” Luca said. “But I agree with your brother. Why are you so bent out of shape about Carla’s presence? She seems…fine.”

Inhaling sharply as I tried to keep myself from growling in frustration. Luca and Matteo always aligned themselves until Luca realized that he needed a more logical presence than my brother.

“She’s hiding something.” I was sure of it. The way she reacted when I pressed her, how there was not so much as a photo of her online, it all added up to something suspicious. In my gut I knew that Carla was hiding something. “And I can’t do my job if I don’t know what it is.”

“I don’t know why Dad put you in charge of her,” Matteo grumbled. “I’m a lot more fun.”

Luca snorted. “That’s probably why. You’d have her on her back in two seconds flat, and I’m sure Uncle Marco wanted to avoid having to kill her father.”

The thought of Carla in Matteo’s bed heightened my anger. Slamming my hands down on the desk, I growled. “Get it together,” I snapped, knocking Matteo’s feet from the desk. “This is important. Carla is living in our home with our mother. Her secrets could put Mom’s life in danger.”

Both Matteo and Luca stiffened slightly. The two of them liked to ignore the reality of the world we lived in. It was easier for them to just be two rich assholes who hated responsibility than to admit that they were part of a mob family that spent decades killing people to gain control of the city.

Even Luca, who’d killed to save his father, liked ignoring the reality when he could.

I wasn’t like the two of them. My father didn’t allow me to be.

“What exactly do you want us to do?” Matteo asked.

One thing I could always count on was that my brother would come around. Matteo might shirk his responsibility, but when push came to shove, he would do his part. Especially if there was a threat to our mother.

“I want you to dig into her background.”

He groaned. “Eli—”

I shook my head. “You are the best hacker I know.” I smiled at him. Matteo loved having his ego stroked, and I wasn’t so prideful that I wouldn’t give my brother his due. When it came to computers, Matteo was good.

“And if your father finds out, it’ll be both your asses,” Luca reminded. “And then, I’m sure he will have mine.”

“Are you worried about our father?” I laughed sardonically. “Since when is the great Luca Blanchi worried about anything?”

Luca rolled his eyes. “I didn’t say I was worried. I simply wanted to make sure that we were all on the same page.”

“Noted.”

The vibration on my phone in my pocket drew my attention. “I’ve got to go.”

“Where?” Matteo asked.

I sighed. “Duty calls.”

It was noon, and that meant I needed to go back to guard duty. Carla was taking classes half a day, which gave me some freedom, but that was it. When the clock struck, I needed to go back to work.

“This summer is going to fucking suck,” I muttered.

CHAPTERNINE

“Why are you taking summer classes?” I asked as I grabbed my books. “It’s clear that you don’t need to be here.”

Sophia was the smartest person I think I’d ever met. Spanish was my second language, one that I spoke fluently, and she’d run circles around me in class. Not that she was cocky about it.

Her cheeks flushed as she looked at me. “I’m applying to college a year early, so the school agreed to let me take some of the senior courses over the summer.”

“Wow,” I told her.
