Caleb shrugged. “It’s alright,” he said. “I didn’t want to leave my family, but when I got into the program, my mother pushed the issue.”

I nodded. Caleb was close to his family. His father had once been a hedge fund manager to the stars, but when we started high school, they lost everything when it came out that his father was a thief.

That kind of thing might break some families, but for Caleb, it had strengthened their ties.

“It’s not been too bad, though.” He gave me an easy smile. “Especially when I ran into you.”

I smiled at Caleb. There were parts of him that were so charming. His hand reached up to cup my cheek, and I allowed it. His touch was too dry, and his skin was chilly on my skin. My initial reaction was to pull away, but I didn’t.

It wasn’t fair to compare Caleb’s touch to Eli. Eli had tricked me. He was an asshole.

“I missed you, babe.” Caleb leaned down towards me, and I knew that he was going to kiss me. I tried to relax my body. Caleb and I had kissed hundreds, even thousands, of times. But this time, I didn’t want it.

I pressed my hands against his chest. “Don’t.” My voice was barely above a whisper, but it was a hard no.

Caleb blinked. “Carla…”

His hands had wrapped themselves around my waist, holding me in place, and I started to feel a bit of panic unfurl in my chest. I ignored it. Caleb wasn’t going to hurt me.

“I can’t.” I tried to pull away, but his grip tightened around my waist.

Caleb’s once soft eyes turned hard in an instance, and I felt a chill run down my spine at the change. I realized that I had never really seen Caleb angry. “Is this because of that meathead you are with?” He sneered his words. “You moved on quickly.”

I stiffened at his tone more than his words. “We haven’t been together for months.” I was trying to stay rational. I was alone in a room with Caleb, whose fingertips were digging into my side hard enough to leave bruises, and no one knew where I’d gone.

I cursed myself for my stupidity. “I’m sure that you haven’t been a monk during our time apart.”

Caleb’s eyes flashed, and I felt a bit of fear in my heart. I’d assumed that Caleb wouldn’t hurt me. He never seemed like the type, but I would also be the first person to admit that I didn’t know Caleb as well as I might have claimed in the past.

“You wouldn’t talk to me. What the hell was I supposed to do? I didn’t expect to see you with some rich asshole in New York when you wouldn’t give me a chance.”

My hands were still on his chest, and my back was rigid as Caleb tried to press me back into the bed.

“But it’s okay.” His tone shifted again, and my blood began to pound as I realized that Caleb wasn’t stable. His eyes were blown out, and I knew that he’d taken something. “I can win you back.”

He used his weight to press me back into the bed and climbed atop me. “Caleb,” I cried out, pressing my hands against his chest. “Stop!”

But Caleb wasn’t rational. Whatever he’d taken was flooding his brain, driving out common sense and reason.

“You used to like when I touched you.” His fingers were skating over the exposed skin of my thigh. They felt like spiders on my skin, and I tried not to retch at the touch.

“Caleb, stop,” I repeated, pressing against his chest again. “You’re high. You aren’t thinking clearly.”

His lips went to my neck, and he groaned. “You smell so fucking good.” His cock was pressed against me, and tears prickled my eyes. I hated myself for being so weak, but Caleb was twice my size, and his body felt like dead weight. He was going to rape me.

But I was not going to go quietly. There were a ton of people outside the door. Surely, someone might hear me.

Caleb’s lips were on my neck, and he was ignoring the way that I was thrashing beneath him. He groaned as he thrust against me, and I screamed out.

It didn’t stop him. His hands continued to be all over my body, and no amount of squirming or screaming appeared to be getting through to him.

Tears streamed down my face as I realized no one was coming to help me, and that I was not going to get away.

Caleb didn’t notice as he struggled with my dress. I felt myself going limp as I began to disassociate what was happening.

Craaack

I couldn’t see past Caleb, but the sound of the wooden door splintering, and the music growing louder caused my heart to start anew.
