Sophia tilted her head as she thought. “You said that that wasn’t uncommon.”

“It wasn’t uncommon for him to party with ecstasy. Caleb is practically a chemist. He would know that giving me as much GHB as he did would incapacitate me.”

Even that night, I wondered why he’d given me something that made me so heavy and lethargic, especially when we were out partying. But after everything, Caleb dosing me too high was not something I spent too much time thinking about.

Now, that felt like a mistake.

A loud exhale from Sophia caught my attention. “I’m not trying to say that you aren’t right.” Sophia chose her words carefully as she spoke. “But do you think that maybe you imprinted on him?”

I knew that Sophia meant well, but I was also certain that I was right. The ding of the door chime drew Sophia’s attention, and the sharp inhale of breath made me look back.

Eli, Luca, and Matteo walked into the small shop, and the air in the room felt thin.

Sophia’s shoulders tensed, and I knew she was preparing herself for a fight. I hadn’t told Sophia what happened between me and Eli, but Sophia knew that something occurred.

“What are you three doing here?” Her lips were thinned and pressed together so hard that it was clear she was full of disdain for them. “Don’t you have small children to terrorize or something equally as nefarious?”

Matteo took a seat. “You are my favorite victim.”

Sophia’s cheeks heated up at Matteo’s words, and I wondered if she was turned on by the suggestion or horrified. The situation between the two of them was always weird, and I felt like a bad friend, since I hadn’t really asked.

“We want to talk to you.” Luca grabbed a chair, pulling it close to the small table.

“About?”

Eli had not spoken, but he didn’t take his eyes off of me. They weren’t as cold as they’d been when I first met him, and as our eyes met, I felt myself falling into them. As desperate as I was to fall into his arms, I couldn’t. He’d betrayed me, and Morenos didn’t take betrayal lightly.

“Do you know who this is?” Luca slid his phone toward me, and I was shocked to see a photo of Caleb on it.

I looked at Eli. “Did you follow him?” I asked, my heart beating quickly in my chest. My breath came up short. “Is he still alive?”

“Who’s in the photo?” Eli pressed his finger against the screen. “This guy.” I noticed that he ignored the question I asked him.

“Eli?” I was not going to answer any questions until I knew if Eli killed Caleb. I hated that I was sure that that was a possibility. Last night, I’d seen Eli shred the mask that he normally wore—that of the small, unaffected millionaire’s son. And his true self came out. The anger that I’d felt roll off him reminded me of my father. Eli was the son of a mafia enforcer, and I knew that if it came to it, he would end Caleb, and maybe, not feel guilty about it.

“Your ex lives another day,” Luca supplied. “Not that anyone should care if he died. Hell, he’s got one foot in the grave already.”

I said nothing, nor did I take my eyes off Eli. He didn’t even blink. He just watched my expression as Luca spoke.

“The man?” Luca tapped the top of the desk, drawing my attention back to the phone.

“That’s Callum Strong,” I told them. “He’s Caleb’s brother.”

The photo wasn’t great, but I knew Callum. He’d always given me the creeps. Unlike Caleb, Callum lacked any sort of warm charisma. From what Caleb told me, their father being arrested changed his brother. The two of them had been close, and the loss of their father and fortune was difficult for him.

“Why would his brother be in New York?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know.” This time I addressed my words to Eli. “Despite what you might think, I don’t spend a lot of time talking to Caleb.”

Eli’s expression didn’t change.

“Don’t you find it interesting that your ex-boyfriend and his brother both come to New York the same time that you do?” Matteo asked. It was the first time that he’d spoken since he sat at the table. “Like maybe they are trying to meet up with you?”

“For what?” I asked, crossing my arms over my chest, feeling my anger starting to get the best of me. Ever since the party, Matteo had been coming forward, and this frustration was starting to come to a head. “If you have something to say, go ahead and say it.”

Matteo took that as a challenge. “It’s odd that the only suspects in your family’s murder are now in New York.”

I gripped the edge of the table so tightly that I was surprised I didn’t break the edge of it into pieces. “How fucking dare you.”
