Caleb must have realized all of that as well. He stopped abruptly causing me to slam into his side. He stopped for a moment, and I could practically see the gears starting to turn in his head.

“You are going to come with me without putting up a fight.”

This made me snort. “You are fucking delusional if you think that that is going to happen.”

Caleb pulled me towards his body. I slammed into his chest, surprised by the amount of strength he displayed. These days Caleb was constantly surprising me in bad ways, and it was getting annoying.

“Listen to me.” Caleb’s eyes were large and round. His pupils were dilated, taking over his entire iris. “If you don’t come with me, Callum is going to kill him.”

My heart stopped. “What are you talking about?”

I knew Callum was in the city from the photo that Luca and Eli showed me that morning. Callum Strong had always scared me. There was something about him that was unhinged. Unlike Caleb who lost himself in drugs and partying, Callum was almost methodically clean. He was also obsessed with Caleb in a way that I’d always found weird. Hell, I had a twin, and we hadn’t even been that close.

Caleb’s eyes started to get wilder by the moment. “He’s got your new boyfriend.”

Ice flooded my veins, and I tried my best to keep myself from hyperventilating. I tried to remind myself that Eli was the son of a mobster. He’d grown up in the life. There was no way that Callum would have been able to get the drop on him.

“I can see your mind whirling behind those beautiful eyes of yours.” Caleb reached into his back pocket and pulled out his phone. He lifted it to show me a photo. Eli was tied to a chair. His head was lulled to one side as though he were knocked out. That wasn’t the most disturbing thing though.

There was a gun pointed at Eli’s head. And while I couldn’t see who was holding it, I knew it was Callum.

“So, you need to come with me,” Caleb continued. “Or else Callum is going to do something crazy.”

“He’s holding a gun to someone’s head,” I countered. “That’s pretty crazy.”

Caleb let go of my arm, probably because he realized that the photo of Eli in the chair was going to keep me rooted in place. He was right. Eli and I might not be together at the moment, but I would never allow him to get caught up in whatever this was.

Caleb released a small chuckle. His hands were shaking so badly that I started to feel bad for him. “Are you okay?” I asked. I reached out towards him, but Caleb pulled away.

“Callum…” He shook his head. “He’s on edge. If I don’t get you there, he’s going to kill him.”

It was on the tip of my tongue to ask about my family. Something told me that in this moment, Caleb would tell me the truth. But I kept my mouth shut. Eli’s life was in the balance.

“It’s okay.” I kept my voice soft as I reached a hand out towards him, treating him almost like a scared child. “I’ll go with you, and we can sort this all out.”

Caleb nodded. “Yeah,” he said. “We can fix this.”

He reached his hand out towards me, and I placed mine in his, even though the feeling of his skin on mine made my skin crawl.

“We can fix this.” Caleb was repeating the words, but it felt like he was saying them to himself.

Something told me that things were about to get worse before they got better.

CHAPTERFORTY

The apartment that Caleb led me to wasn’t that far from where he’d been staying, but the place was a dump.

“We need to go to the basement.” Caleb hadn’t spoken more than a few words to me since his meltdown, and it had taken everything for me not to scream at him in frustration, especially when he placed a pill in his mouth.

But I knew I needed to keep my cool. Eli was in trouble.

“The basement?” There was a bit of a tremble in my voice as Caleb led me to a metal door. This place looked like it was the set of a horror movie, and my spidey senses were going insane.

“Callum is working at the building management,” Caleb explained.

“How long has he been here?”

Caleb had come to see me early in the summer, and I’d never considered that Callum might be in the city.
