“I think you can do more than you know,” he says. “All I need for you to do is get back in with him and find me something I can use to bring the bastard down within his own family.”

“Like what?”

“I’m not sure yet. You’ll know it when you see it.”

“I think you have a lot more confidence in my ability to do this than I do,” I laugh nervously.

“If you’re anything like your brother, then my faith in you is not misplaced,” Malacoda smiles. He has the kind of cool, steely smile that reminds me of Christian. And as soon as I think about Christian again, my resolve is solidified.

“I’ll do it,” I say, determined to do whatever has to be done in order to help Christian. “And then you’ll help Christian?”

“Yes. You have my word.”

Christian isn’t going to be happy I’ve agreed to this, and neither is my brother for that matter. But I’ve grown tired of feeling like a trapped victim here. If I’m going to be in this city for longer still, I’m going to start making it work for me instead of letting it break me.

“What was that all about?” Loreto asks me as we drive away together.

“I’ll tell you later. Just an errand he wants me to run.”

“What kind of errand?” he asks, looking at me suspiciously.

I can’t tell my brother what Malacoda asked me to do, because he’ll undoubtably try to stop me from doing it. “Just something small, but he’s agreed to help Christian in return.” I can tell Loreto isn’t thrilled I’m keeping something from him, which is why I have him stop the car when I know I’m in walking distance of my father’s house, and jump out quickly. “I’ll be back soon,” I say, walking away before he has a chance to protest.

I really do hope that’s true and that Iwillbe back soon. Walking back to my father opens the door for many things to go wrong.

CHRISTIAN

I’ve been in a lot of fights in my time, and granted, I’m usually in better shape than my current condition. But I’ve always played by the well-established rules of the various mafia families. This time, I’m fully aware I’m going rogue. My men and I attack the Hell’s Devils turf, starting with their clubhouse and branching out from there to their homes in the middle of the night. I’ve got my whole crew with me this time, all fully armed with guns, knives, piano wire, and everything in between.

We surprise them in their sleep, taking out the shift guards first. In all honesty, Roman’s idea of security is ragged. He only has two men posted outside their clubhouse, one of which already looks drunk before he even notices me coming. The homes of the biker gang are entirely unprotected. If this was mafia turf, everycapowould have security detail protecting his family. The entireborgatawould be secure to varying extents depending on thecapo. But here, it’s as easy as picking off a drunken camper.

We take one dwelling after another, slaughtering as many as possible and killing everyone in our path. My men follow my lead, completely obedient to my orders. By the time word has spread to warn the others, we’ve already killed most of them. A few manage to run away but I don’t bother with them. The end result remains a complete and total gutting of Hell’s Devils.

“Where’s Roman?” I ask. I haven’t seen him yet and we’ve already struck the clubhouse and his personal home. Both Rex and Matteo look at me and shrug. I reach down and grab one of the bikers bleeding out on the floor near my feet. I hate when I get my shoes dirty. “Where’s Roman Gunther?” I demand as I squeeze my nails into his shoulder.

“Go fuck yourself,” he spits at me. “I’m not telling you anything.”

I expected as much. But I also know how to make men talk. “Suit yourself,” I say with an unwavering stare at the life slowly fading from his face. “But when I find your family, I’ll make sure to tell them it was your uncooperative attitude that’s responsible for the agonizing deaths they’ll endure. Or you could just tell me what I want to know.”

Even though he’s moments away from death himself, the biker suddenly looks terrified and compliant. “Roman is at his girlfriend’s apartment,” he blurts out. “Two doors down.”

I toss him back down onto the ground and his eyes roll back into his head when his skull hits the street. “Thanks,” I say as I give him the mercy shot in the head he earned.

When we reach the apartment he directed me to, sure enough Roman and a naked woman are there in the bedroom. They have music blasting and are right in the act of a furious fucking, which explains why Roman didn’t hear the commotion outside. It’s too bad—the girl is rather attractive. After a single bullet shot to the head, she isn’t so pretty anymore, though. Roman jumps up, naked, wet cock and all, and reaches over for the gun he left in his pants lying on the floor.

I aim to shoot him, but Rex gets a hit in first by tossing a bottle of liquortoward him and then throwing his lit Zippo. There’s enough alcohol spilled all around him that it instantly ignites. I wish he hadn’t done that, because I want to make sure Roman is dead, and the fireclouds my field of vision and pushes us out of the room as the place lights up. But regardless of whether or not Roman bites the dust in that room or manages to escape wounded, this is a success. His gang is decimated, his girlfriend dead. I lost only one man in the fight, but it was otherwise a success on my part.

“What about Valentino Ricci?” Rex reminds me.

“I intend to put down that traitorous, dishonorable scumbag, along with any of his relatives helping him. He’s nothing more than a weasel we can easily smoke out of his hole. Without Roman’s gang to back him up, Valentino is no match for us.”

“Hear me out,” Matteo says as we get into my car and leave before the cops arrive. “Before you go rushing in there blowing Ricci heads off their shoulders, maybe you should try asking Valentino to stand down first.”

“Why would I do that when I can simply blow him out of the water?”

“Because even though the guy is a snake, hedoeshave a flourishing drug business. If you blow him up, all his connects go with him to the grave. But if you make him afraid enough to stand down and honor his agreement with you, you stand a chance of being able to help yourself to his business dealings.”
