“That’s always possible,” Mariah said, “but two going down at the same time? That’s highly unlikely.”

“Have you checked any of the other members to see if their beacons are still working?”

Mariah shook her head. Pulling her phone from her back pocket, she scrolled until she came to what she was looking for.

“Fuck,” she cursed. “There are three more beacons offline as well. That’s definitely not a coincidence.”

“Whose beacons are still online?” I didn’t really know any of the club members personally. I’d heard their names a few times, but we hadn’t had time for formal introductions. Part of me still couldn’t believe that I had only known the two of them for a few days. It felt like I had known them for years.

The phone Wolf had given me this morning buzzed from its place on the dresser. I answered it, holding up a finger to Mariah, asking her to wait.

“Hello?”

“Freya.” Doc Carlson’s voice slipped through the speakers. “Thank the Moon God I was able to get a hold of you. We have an issue.”

“I heard Wolf and Hunter are missing.”

“Yes…” Doc stuttered, surprised that I already knew. “Granny went missing from the hospital this morning. Last I checked, she was heading toward the old mines on theoutermost reaches of the Hoh rainforest. We think it’s the mine nearest to your former pack’s location.”

How did he know about the mines? Or where my old pack was? It had just been the three of us in that room with Granny when she told us her story, and even I couldn’t point out on a map where the compound was.

“Why would she go to the mines?” I questioned him. “The ritual would need to be completed by Damien.”

“Maybe she thought that’s where he would be. The place where it all started.”

“Maybe…” I trailed off. “Can you send me the location? I can meet you there.”

“Or I can pick you up and we can go together.”

“No, you’re in town, so you’re already closer. Maybe if you get there before me, we can get a better idea of what’s going on.”

Yep, that’s not happening. Something fishy was going on.

Carlson agreed, promising to text me the coordinates before we ended the call.

Turning to Mariah, I said, “Whose beacon is still online?”

She looked down at her phone, confusion and surprise spreading across her face.

“Huh, that’s odd. The only one who’s online is Switzerland.”

“Why is that odd?”

“Because his beacon is the only beacon that wasn’t placed by Doc Carlson.”

My phone buzzed again, and I looked down to see a text. He’d sent me the location. I flashed my screen at Mariah. “Compare this location to the one you have on Switzerland.”

She eyed the screen for a moment. “Switzerland’s about half a mile away from there.”

“Is there anything else near Switzerland’s location?”

“Not that I can tell. Just looks like a rock quarry.”

I knew that rock quarry. It was located inside the compound. It was where a lot of the females would go to bathe and gossip.

“Al right, here’s what I want you to do. Is there someone Hunter and Wolf would call in case of an emergency? For backup?”

Mariah nodded. “There are a few other clubs that we’re allied with.”
