“I don’t know, Ky. We haven’t met in person yet.”And I don’t think we ever will or should.

“Why not? Go for coffee or something.”

“Because…compatibility doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Lots of people have things in common with each other.”

Our eyes meet and she smiles. “But you like him.”

I wish I could say yes, but given the circumstances, I lie. “I don’t know enough about him to answer that.”

“We need to go dress shopping. I’m thinking a cute little red dress that’ll show off your legs.” Kylie claps her hands and throws herself back into the seat as she used to whenever I took her roller skating.

I glance in the rearview mirror and see her already texting on her phone.

“Not a word to Gramma! She’s got a big mouth!”

She agrees with a hum.

When my mother returns, she’s carrying two large paper bags and deposits them on the floor by Kylie’s boots.

“What the heck did you buy?”

“A few snacks for the game,” she replies, sliding into the passenger’s seat.

Our pit stop at the station lasts for more than an hour. Two tables are set with snacks for the Super Bowl. All the cute, young volunteers stopped playing pool and sauntered over to talk to Kylie and my dad wanted to show off the new truck.

The snow has started to fall again so it’s my excuse to get us going.

“The roads are going to get slick, Mom.”

Nodding, she gives my dad a quick kiss and says goodbye to the guys. I follow her lead and then push the door open with my hip, but I nearly fall flat on my butt when it opens easily.

“Whoa!” I cry as I find myself cocooned against a hard body, secured by a big, strong arm that belongs to someone who smells wonderful.

“I’ve got you, sweetheart,” the voice asks smoothly against my hair.

I look up and find his eyes. “Jack,” I gasp, dropping my gaze to his lips that are mere inches from mine. He looks freshly showered and clean-shaven even though his cheeks are pink. The smell of his cologne makes me inhale sharply, causing the butterflies in my belly to flutter. I’m completely entranced by this man, but the moment passes quickly when I hear muffled laughter and realize several pairs of eyes are watching. I struggle to my feet and lick my lips. Lifting my chin, I slip my stoic mask back into place. “Thank you.”

“My pleasure, Savannah,” he says as his eyes slide down my body and the corner of his mouth tips upward into a smirk. Our eyes meet and I try, in vain, to control the adrenaline making my heart race. The red ball cap, embroidered with JP3, does little to shield his smoldering eyes.

“What are you doinghere?”

“I work here. Why areyouhere?”

Shifting my gaze, I nod to where my father is sitting. “My dad.”

“No, shit!”

My eyes roll and I purse my lips.

“What?” he chuckles.

“Nothing.” I call back to my mother and daughter who are whispering together as their eyes bounce back and forth between Jack and me. “Ready?”

“Savannah,” my dad says, walking over and placing a hand on Jack’s shoulder. “I’d like you to meet the new chief, Jack Perkins.”

“We met.”

Jack intervenes. “It’s not official yet, Bob.”
