“No man does.”

I twist his hair again and smile menacingly before rinsing it.

“Fuck,” he laughs, “that’s a bad habit.”

“So is cursing!”

The bell jingles again. Tyson, the UPS driver, walks in carrying several boxes of new products.

“Hey, Savannah. How’re you doin’?”

I nod, offering a tight-lipped greeting in return before grabbing a towel from the rack and drying Jack’s hair. “Good, thanks. You can just leave the boxes there.”

Tyson looks down at Jack and then back at me. “I didn’t think you opened this early.”

“I don’t, but he’s the new fire chief so…”

He replies with a grunt.

“Apparently the job comes with some perks,” Jack adds.

I tap his shoulder, telling him to rise. Jack Perkins looks utterly ridiculous yet incredibly delicious with the towel around his head. I chuckle and follow him back to my chair.

“Is something funny?”

I nod. “You! You look ridiculous with all of this on.”

In the mirror, he drags his eyes down my body. “And I bet you look delicious with nothing on.”

My eyes flick over to Tyson who’s scanning the packages. He does not indicate that he’s heard when he waves goodbye and says he’ll see me later in the week.

“Why’s he going to see you later? You have a date or something?”

I laugh. “With him? Eww, no way!”

My answer seems to pacify and ease away the scowl on his face.

“So what’s your deal? You just show up out of nowhere and become the new chief? Last I knew, Henry Watson’s name was being tossed around.”

“I’ve been here a while.”

“Well, I haven’t seen you.”

“Maybe you weren’t looking hard enough.”

The buzz of the clippers ends our conversation, but I feel the weight of his stare as I work.

Just as I took my time washing his hair, I extend my leisure while cutting it.

My phone pings with the app’s distinct tone and I suppress a grin.

“That your boyfriend?”

“Not yet. Just a guy I’ve been talking to,” I lie.

“Your father said you’re single.”

“I’m thirty-seven years old,” I say, bending down to whisper in his ear. “I don’t tell my parents everything I do or whom I do it with.”
