I hitch my finger over my shoulder. “Down the hall.”
As Jack leaves the room, I hear his muffled laughter. I’m not sure what’s so amusing.
I pivot and grab my beer, taking a long pull as I open the app. A message was sent earlier tonight just before the event started.
DanDad007: The woman I’m with is here. It’s best we not meet. Take care.
Another message arrived moments ago.
DanDad007: You were the most beautiful woman there.
The memory of Jack saying similar words appears in my mind as he walks back into the kitchen.
“Jack?” I breathe as my heart pounds in my chest.
“Yeah?”
I round the island and stand before him, looking up into his smoldering eyes. “What kind of cologne do you wear?”
He smirks. “I don’t.”
I stand on my tiptoes, place my hands on his biceps and smell his neck. The scent forces my eyes closed for a second. “Then what’s that?” I ask when I reopen my eyes and find his.
“Aftershave.”
A thousand horses gallop across my heart when he cups my jaw with a rugged palm.
“Do you have any siblings?”
“No, I’m an only child named after my father and his father before him.”
The look in his eyes is hopeful, but it takes several seconds for things to register.
JP3.Tre.
“You’re Jack Perkins, the third?”
He fights a smile and nods. “When I was a kid, my granddad called me Tre.”
I swallow thickly as comprehension fills my brain. “Noooo!You’reTre?? Are you kidding me?”
Jack shakes his head and slides his arms around my waist, pulling me flush with his chest. “No, Stella214. I’m not kidding.”
An incredulous eruption of laughter bursts out of me. “No way! You’re totally messing around with me!”
Without warning, Jack has me pressed up against the wall with my arms raised above my head.
“You like True Crime documentaries. You blew me off when I asked you to go hiking and we were supposed to meet at Marcelo’s, but I canceled.”
“It’s really you?”
He lowers his head and ghosts his lips over mine. “I had no idea either.”
“But Kylie-”
“Was never matched with me.”
“You have a dog?”
