Liam’s eyebrows raised. “This could be huge.”

“It could,” Lillian said. “There’s just one problem.”

“What’s that?” I asked.

“We’ll be there to talk shop, so...”

“So they’ve only invited the family,” Liam said.

Hold the freaking phone. Was I about to be left alone in this palatial mansionwithAlex fordays?

Lillian nodded as if reading my mind. “I’m so sorry, dear. But we’ve been waiting years for this opportunity. I don’t think we can let it pass.”

Liam nodded, and I could practically see the gears turning in his mind. Finally, he said, “Mom, can you give us a minute, please?”

Lillian nodded and left the room.

Liam turned to me, placing his hands on my shoulders. “What do you think I should do?”

What could I even say? The thought of being left alone with Alex felt like a form of slow torture, but I had heard Lillian loud and clear and wanted to be supportive of this amazing opportunity.

“I think you should go.”

“But that means you and Alex will be here alone and—”

“And we’ll be fine.” He looked at me for a long moment, so I added, “What is it?”

He sighed. “When I get back, there’s something I want to talk to you about.”

My stomach lurched. “Should I be worried?”

He kissed me on the forehead. “Absolutely not.”

Then almost as quickly as we’d arrived, the Greys left again, leaving Alex and me standing alone in the foyer.

I wrung my hands together, avoiding eye contact. Why is it that whenever I’m nervous, I don’t know what the hell to do with my hands?I silently pondered.Say something.

“So,” I said. “Looks like it’s just you and me.”

He smiled a half-smile. “Yeah.”

Silence.

“Alex?”

“Yeah, Brooke?”

“Do you want to get really drunk?”

Alex exhaled. “Fuck yes.”

Approximately one hour, one trip to the backyard patio, and two and a half bottles of wine later, Alex and I couldn’t shut up.

“What about the time we went to that zoo, and the alpaca ate your shirt?” I cackled with laughter.

“Hey!” Alex said in mock outrage. “Animals haven’t been the kindest to you either. What about the time we went to the Dodgers game, and that bird pooped on your hat?”

He laughed as he stood from his lounge chair and grabbed another bottle of red wine from the outdoor fridge.
