‘What’s a party without dancing?’ she responded archly.

‘I’ll take your word for it.’

‘Don’t tell me you don’t dance?’

‘That surprises you? Did we ever dance back then?’

‘No. There wasn’t the opportunity.’

And then his other hand lifted to her cheek, cupping it, holding her still so he could inspect her better in the fading light of the day. His eyes trapped hers and it felt as though she were tipping off the edge of the earth. She was in a void with nothing and no one else—just Graciano and herself.

‘I dance rarely.’

‘I bet you’re good at it.’ She could have sewn her lips together!

‘How much?’

‘An actual wager?’

‘Sure. Unless you’re scared to lose?’

‘I won’t lose. I know you’ve got rhythm.’

His features showed scepticism. ‘We’ll see.’

‘Okay. A hundred euros?’

‘I was thinking more like a non-monetary wager.’

Her heart crashed into her ribs with the force of a jet engine. ‘Such as?’ The words were barely audible.

‘If I win, you’ll answer any question I have.’

Danger lurked. Annie was, as always, in the back of her mind. ‘No.’

His eyes narrowed. ‘Keeping secrets?’

She blinked down at the grass between them. ‘I’ll give you three questions,’ she said unevenly. ‘And I get to veto one of them.’

‘You drive a hard bargain.’

‘What do I get if I win?’

‘What do you want?’

She felt heat stain her cheeks and looked away, embarrassed by how easy she was to read. ‘The same deal. Three questions.’

‘And a veto.’

‘Fair enough.’

He dropped his hand to her other, capturing both. ‘Are you ready?’

‘What for?’

‘To dance.’

‘Withme?’ she squeaked.
