Best wishes,

Alicia

It was not unlike any number of emails he received on a daily basis, and that in and of itself was a problem.

She wasn’t just some colleague...someone he’d employed for a job. She was Alicia.

Unfinished business, indeed.

With a grim expression on his features, he hit Reply.

Alicia,

I have some questions. Can we meet to discuss?

Graciano hesitated before he remembered he didn’t second-guess himself and hit Send.

The ball was in her court, but he already knew what she’d say. No one who took such obvious pride in their professional abilities would disappoint a client.

He leaned back and waited, every cell in his body stretching taut for no reason he could think of.

She swore as she read the email. It wasn’t completely unexpected, but it sent a thousand feelings rioting through her. She knew she’d need to see him again, to finally tell him about Annie, but it still felt almost impossible.

I can speak now.

She waited, and sure enough, the reply came through within a minute.

No, in person. I’ll send a car.

Her heart leaped into her throat.

Are you in London?

Yes. What’s your address?

Everything began to tremble.

I can’t come right away. I have an appointment at four p.m.

She had Annie’s parent-teacher interview scheduled for that afternoon.

The response was immediate.

Tonight?

Everything shifted. She wanted to tell him no and she wanted to tell him ‘Hell, yes.’ But at the end of the day, this was just business, the last of her obligation to him. He’d paid five hundred thousand pounds for the privilege, after all.

I can give you an hour. Six o’clock?

What’s your address?

She shook her head. She wasn’t going to let him send a car. She couldn’t live in a world where Graciano knew where her house was.

I’ll come to you.

If you prefer.

He included an address in Knightsbridge at the bottom of the email and she pushed her phone away like it was poison, before reaching for it once more to see if Diane—her saviour—was available to help with Annie.
