‘What is it?’

‘I believe your brother is in Savisia.’

‘The Middle East? Why?’

‘I’m still looking into that, but the theory holds together.’

‘I don’t want “holds together”,’ Graciano said, shaking his head. ‘I want watertight.’

‘Let me tell you what I’ve got.’ He proceeded to outline the working theory. When the accident occurred, the sheikh of Savisia was touring Spain with his young wife. We don’t know much, but they donated a large sum to the hospital to keep everything off the books and your brother seems to have gone home with them. This all checks out—the dates, their visit, the two-million-pound donation.’

Graciano closed his eyes. ‘My brother disappeared off the radar. It explains why no adoption agency has ever heard of him. Why I couldn’t find him.’

‘What about the American connection?’

‘Best I can guess, they used an American senator’s private jet to fly him out—a diplomatic favour.’

Graciano swore.

‘I have a photo of him.’

‘Send it to me.’

The investigator paused. ‘I will. But before you open it, there are two things you should know.’

‘Yes?’

‘Your brother was very young.’

‘I’m aware of that.’

‘He suffered a lot of trauma in the accident. Preliminary reports suggest his memory may have been affected by his injuries. That would explain why they were able to take him.’

‘And why my visit was upsetting to him,’ Graciano said, piecing it together.

‘Yes.’

‘You said there were two things I should know?’

‘Your brother is now the ruling sheikh of Savisia. He may not welcome a voice from his past, challenging his right to the throne.’

Graciano gripped the phone tight, staring at his family with all the love in his heart. ‘He will,’ he said, nodding confidently.

‘How can you be so sure?’

‘Because I’ve recently become a believer in second chances.’
