“Dinner’s almost ready. Hope Thai bowls are okay. I went for something quick and easy.”

“Sounds great.” I pull off my boots and follow her into the kitchen. Rice simmers on the stove and a chopping board loaded with veggies sits on the counter. I wash my hands and snag a carrot.

“Know what tomorrow is?” she asks, pulling out a sauté pan.

“Yep. It’s Saturday.”

Dee glances over her shoulder at me, her eyes narrowed. “You better be joking.”

“Maybe.” I wink, messing with her.

“Mick.”

“Come on, beauty. How could I forget that it’s been one month since I married the girl of my dreams?”

“Aw.” That pleases her. “We should do something to celebrate, or is that too cheesy?”

“No. It’s an excellent idea.” I rub my chest and smile. How could I feel anything but happy that she wants to celebrate our marriage? There were a few days after we returned from the island that she’d seemed a little withdrawn. Postwedding blues she’d called it. I was concerned, but then it quickly passed and I didn’t question her further. Maybe I’d been afraid to.

“Oh!” Her sudden outburst startles my thoughts. “I want to show you something.”

“Jesus, woman, are you trying to give me a heart attack?”

“Sorry.” She laughs and tugs on my hand, leading me into the living room. Her iPad is set up on top of the fireplace. She pulls it to her and awakens the screen. “I can’t decide which color frame I like better forour wedding photos. I’m thinking of doing a collage above the mantel. What do you prefer?” She turns the image to me. “Pearl or…” she slides to the next option, “vanilla cream?”

Both frames look white to me. But a smart man knows better than to say that. “Um…the pearl.”

“Really?” She makes a face. “I’m worried about the shine. The vanilla cream matte might be better against the wall.” She holds it up. “It will also bring out the…”

I lose track of the words, watching her full lips moving. Pink and unpainted. My thoughts stray far from frame choices to taking Dee’s mouth. Then taking her.

“Mick?”

“Huh?”

“Are you even paying attention?”

“I always pay attention to you.”

Her eyebrow arches and she sets down the iPad on the coffee table. “Then what did I just say?”

“Something about shiny things.”

Laughing, she smacks me with a throw pillow. “Remind me again why I married you.”

I wrestle away the cushion she has poised to strike again and pull her against me. “Because I make you hot.”

“Humph.”

“Speaking of hot, I like what you’re wearing.” I nip her earlobe.

“You’re trying to distract me.”

“That too. But I mean it.” Dee is all the more radiant when she feels good about herself. It brightens everything around her, including me. “I love seeing you confident and showing off that sexy body.”

“I’m getting there.”

“It’s hard to top perfection.” My hands push into her falling hair. “But you’re constantly progressing.”
