“Of course, it matters. You matter, Mick.”

“Christ!” He thumps the steering wheel.

“What did Malcolm mean by ten little reminders?”

“Don’t you ever stop? We’ve dealt with enough for one day. And we still have to get to brunch.”

“I wasn’t sure you’d come.”

“I wasn’t sure either. But good thing I did otherwise I would have missed this vigilante stunt of yours.”

“I am your inspiration forDark Angel.”

“This isn’t funny.”

“True. I’d call it poignant. After all, the stories you write involve tough, kick-ass heroines. You like a strong woman even if you do want to control and dominate.”

“Shut up, Dee.” He lays his head back against the rest. The anger in him dissipates. But the worry is still there. “When Stiles called to tell me where you were headed, I went out of my goddamn mind. If I hadn’t already been in Springvale…if I hadn’t been close…I don’t know what I would have done.”

“I’m fine, Mick. Look at me.” When he does, I angle in my seat to face the fear lingering in his eyes. “I’m sorry. Not for what I did. But that you were scared for me and that I could have put Stiles or you in jeopardy. I didn’t consider the consequences. All I cared about was getting to Malcolm.”

“Why?”

“To call him on the abuse. He never should have been allowed to get away with hurting you and your mother. I wanted him to know that it wasn’t a dirty family secret anymore. I wanted him to know that you are not alone in this.”

“Jesus, Dee. This isn’t some crusade. You don’t go poking the dragon.”

“I’m not afraid of Malcolm.”

“You have no idea what he’s capable of.”

I lean in closer and reach out to brace his bearded cheeks between my palms. Our eyes fix on each other. “Don’t you know that I would fight dragons for you, Micah Anthony? Slay them one by one. That’s how much I love you.”

With a curse, his mouth is on mine in an instant. His hands in my hair, his tongue sliding between my lips, kissing me long, deep, and passionately.

“I’ve missed your taste,” he whispers, nibbling my bottom lip. “Missed your smell.” His nose traces the curve of my neck. “I’ve been in hell, Dee. And I’ve taken you there with me.”

“Then free us both.”

“Beauty,” he exhales and presses his forehead to mine, our noses touching, our lips a breath apart. “Staying away from you was the lesser of two evils.”

“I don’t believe that. Nothing can be worse than us not being together.”

“It’s killing me, too,” he says hoarsely. “It’s killing me to stay away. Killing me to hurt you. I can’t sleep, I can’t eat. I’m barely surviving. But our separation is the price.”

“The price for what?”

“I love you so damn much.” His words are pained whispers. “Everything I’ve done is because I love you.”

“I know that. But you can’t keep hiding your secrets behind your love for me. It’s not fair.”

“I can’t risk you being involved.”

“You’d rather lose me?”

“I can’t stand that either. Victor painted an unbearable picture of you with another man. I wanted to tear the head off of someone that I don’t even know.”

“There’s no one for me, but you.” My hands tighten on his face. “No one. But you have to give me something. You have to be honest with me.”
