Ethan: No. Absolutely not.

Dylan: Guess I should just pick something online…

That should get his attention.

Ethan: What?! I thought you were kidding. I thought this was a joke! You’re actually doing this?

Ethan: Fine, I’ll go, but only because I love Emma. So help me, if you dare suggest anything less than perfection for her…

Ethan: Seriously, we need to talk about this. I don’t want her to freak out.

Dylan: Thanks, I owe you one.

Ethan: Yes, yes you do.

I pocket my phone and head back to the room. Ethan’s right, it has to be perfect.

We leave the hotel and the drive home is filled with laughter, stories, and listening to an audiobook she put on. It's always so easy with her. We can talk about anything, nothing is off limits. My hand rests on her thigh for the entire drive—well, except at one point, when my hand made its way into her pants. Or when she leaned over and took me in her mouth for the best blowjob of my life, which made trying to navigate through traffic incredibly difficult.

I drop her off at home, and as much as I want to come inside and claim her on every surface of her house, I have an appointment downtown. I can't resist, I push her up against the front entry to taste her one more time before leaving. Making her come, with her leg hooked over my shoulder and her hands in my hair…I will be hard the rest of the day thinking about it. Worth being a few minutes late.

An hour or so later, I am finally parked down the street from the store. Ethan beat me here and is waiting outside. “Hey, Ethan, thanks for coming.” My smile hasn’t left my face all day.

He doesn’t smile though. “I don’t like any of this. I just dropped her off last night. I get it, you got laid, but come on! Slow down, man!”

“I'm not doing itright now. I want to have it for the perfect moment.”

His eyes narrow. “I’m only doing this because you would probably pick out something truly hideous on your own, like a pear-shaped, horrible quality diamond, in yellow gold. I’mnothaving that on my conscience.Fuck, you’re going to propose today, aren’t you? And they sayI'mimpulsive. This is a mistake.” He opens the door. “After you.”

We walk inside and I spot my sister. I'm about to say hi when Ethan beats me to it. “Hi, yes, hello.Wow,I hope you don’t mind my saying this, but you are positively enchanting…Sorry, anyway, this guy is looking to marry my best friend. I don’t like it, but here we are. Can you help us find a ring that will wow her, but also is understated enough that she won’t be embarrassed to wear it in public?”

He pauses, waiting for a reaction, and I can’t help but let out a hearty laugh at the fact that he thinks she works here. Melanie is wearing a black business pantsuit and our mother’s pearls. She dresses conservatively—which is required as a corporate lawyer—but sometimes she overdoes it. I can see the confusion, she absolutely looks like she works here.Wait…was he hitting on her?“Hi, Melanie.”

Ethan looks between us and I can tell that it isn’t hint enough for him. He wouldn't be able to guess we are siblings—she looks so much like our mother, where as I look like our father. “We have an appointment? Perfect. Melanie, love, as I said before, this stale bagel needs a ring. What do you recommend?”

It normally takes a lot to make her crack but there’s a small smirk tugging at her lips. “Dylan, who the hell is this?”

“This is Ethan, Emma’s best friend—who I am now regretting asking to come. Ethan, this is Melanie, my little sister.”

“So…youdon’twork here? I should have guessed you don't, but I see no resemblance between the two of you. You’re absolutely stunning.”Yep, he is definitely hitting on my sister. Fuck my life.

“No, I don’t work here. Dylan asked me to come.” Her resting bitch face hasn’t budged but she’s…Is she blushing?Ok, I totally regret inviting him now. There’s some kind of stare-down happening between them and it’s incredibly uncomfortable. He better not get any ideas.

I clear my throat, hoping to interrupt their eye-fucking. “I asked youbothto come to help me pick out a ring.”

Ethan’s gaze snaps to me. “I’m sorry, what?!I liked it better when she worked here. No matter how gorgeous she is, she isnotqualified to pick out a ring for Emma. Damn, are you sure you’re related? She’s”—he gestures at Melanie—“and you’re…” He looks me up and down like I’m bad sushi about to give him food poisoning. “She has no idea what Emma likes. So why is she here?”

“Excuse me? I’m standing right here.” At least the gross sexual tension between them is gone.

“She’s here because I need a woman’s opinion.”

Melanie's now the offended one. “I’m sorry, what? If you hadn’t fucked things up the first time, you would have already been married to her. You don’t need a woman’s opinion, you just need to get your head out of your ass.”Shit, this was a bad idea.

“It appears we have more in common than I thought, princess.” Now Ethan and Melanie are both against me.Fantastic.

“Don’t call me that,” she spits. I never thought I would see the day that someone got under her skin like this. I would pop some popcorn and enjoy the show if it wasn’t for the fact that Ethan is interested in my sister.

“Ok, can we go pick out a ring? You two can fight about this another time.” Luckily, they both listen and we go our separate ways to browse.
