“It involves the man you were watching…” Jana began – and Emily froze as the they stared at each other in awareness.

“You actually like him, you like X-Ray, don’t you?”

“Your date is gorgeous, but I’m not trying to bethatwoman…” Emily said openly, not mincing words, as she processed the fact that his call sign in the Air Force was X-Ray… how interesting! Maybe he was into science? She sure loved math, which is why she did what she did for a living.

Jana interrupted her, grabbing at her hands desperately.

“Girl… please, pleeeease, bethatwoman!” Jana practically begged. “I’mnothis date. I swear it. I’m his friend – a pen pal – and this is the first time I’ve even met the guy. He’s super sweet, lonely, needs a friend, but my goodness – he seriously does nothing for me.”

“What?” Emily whispered in shock, staring at her friend.

“Remember the three things we wanted in a guy? He’s lacking two of them. He’s got the job… yayyy,” Jana drawled flatly, rolling her eyes. “He’s really nice and if you like him – then you need to be his date for the night. Tell him I’m sick in the bathroom or went home… or went anywhere else.”

“You’re not serious…” Emily gaped, stunned. “Oh my gosh. Youareserious? You want me to be his date – and he doesn’t know it? What am I going to say? How am I supposed…”

“I don’t know, but I’ve got to get out of it… please,” Jana begged openly.

“Is this because of Vapor? I saw you looking at him.”

The two women eyed each other… and finally Jana nodded, blushing.

“Your brother is not going to like this…” Emily uttered, having seen the protective looks he’d given his sister over the last few days – and even more so when Vapor was caught looking at Jana in the church.

“I know he’s not,” Jana admitted.

“I don’t know about this…” Emily hedged. It was a little insulting to be begged to take this beautiful girl‘s ‘cast-offs’… but what a breathtakingly handsome cast-off he was!

If it had been anyone else, it would have been an automatic NO.

… And what was X-Ray going to say about this? How was she going to even explain, position herself as a replacement, or say hello – because she certainly wasn’t Jana.

What happened if Jana got dumped by Vapor?

She really didn’t suspect that would occur – but was this outgoing woman expecting her to be just a placeholder in the meantime? Was she going to be begging her to step aside in twenty minutes like nothing ever happened?

“Emily, pleeeease…” Jana whispered, begging. “Things might go really badly, and I might walk back inside in less than a few minutes if he tells me to buzz off – but I swear I won’t interrupt you if that happens.”

Emily stood silently, staring at Jana’s hands clenching hers.

“If you like X-Ray and he lights a fire for you, by golly… go stoke that burning blaze woman. I’ll bring the marshmallows. I promise. I’m sincerely not interested in him,” Jana said passionately, causing her to look up and meet the other woman’s eyes that were searching hers, looking for a glimpse of hope or understanding from Emily.

“Are you sure?” Emily said, drawing in a deep, shaky breath, feeling nervous about what she was actually agreeing to.

“Positive…” Jana breathed, crossing her heart. “I swear.”

Emily sighed, closing her eyes in defeat as Jana let out a small shriek of happiness, immediately hugging her before jumping up and down in excitement.

“I promise you that I’ll owe you one…” Jana exclaimed.

“You owe me big!” Emily countered, trying to appear grumpy.

“And I’ll pay up, I promise.”

“I can’t believe I’m about to go pimp myself to your date and hope he’s okay with it, just so I can see what color his eyes are… dang, I must be desperate,” Emily muttered, shaking her head, laughing softly, and covering her face with her hands, embarrassed at this turn of events.

She never imagined she would be handed a chance to talk to X-Ray on a silver platter… yet Jana was doing just that.

“Thank you, so much…” Jana hissed, hugging her again.
