“Yes, ma’am.”

“Someplace nice?”

“Yup,” he grinned.

“How about… McDonald’s?” she smiled – and his laughter rolled over her making her heart feel so warm and wonderful as she gazed at him.

“We arenotgoing to McDonald’s – unless you want coffee there tomorrow?” he asked suddenly growing quiet. “Would you let me monopolize your time while I’m in town? We could grab a coffee if you want and…”

“What about Jana?”

“I cancelled.”

Emily blinked in surprise and stared at him, stunned.

“You did?”

“Yeah. Now, where to milady?” he smiled gently at her. “We should celebrate new friendships, shouldn’t we?”

“Yes,” she replied breathlessly, unable to hold back the smile that touched her face as she looked at him. “How adventurous are you? Any food allergies?”

“None – and I love eating,” he laughed, patting his jacket where his flat stomach was. “I have terrible table manners, but can talk your ear off if I know what I’m discussing.”

“Does it have to be someplace fancy?”

He smiled at her.

“What do you have in mind?”

“It’s this little hole-in-the-wall that I love and get takeout from there often.”

“Are we overdressed – but it’s delicious?”

“Absolutely,” she grinned, as his smile widened.

“Thenallons-y,” he said obligingly, opening the car door for her. “Where to?”

“Oh man… you are going to laugh,” she smiled nervously, tucking a flyaway piece of hair behind her ear and pushing up her glasses, glancing at him. He was waiting for her to get in the car and watching her with avid interest, like he was enjoying this.

“You’re not opposed to messy food?”

“Are you?”

“No – napkins will be plentiful…” she chuckled.

“Where to, Em…” he asked again softly. “I’m really curious now what you consider messy, delicious food.”

“It’s this kitchen market called the Krazy Cajun and…” Emily hesitated as his face fell in disbelief.

“We don’t have to go there!” she balked immediately, realizing she’d made a mistake. “We can go somewhere else! I just love the place, and no one ever wants to go because some people eat with their fingers, and they whine about how spicy some of it is. I told you it looks like a dive, but it’s not. It’s just super good, themed, and…”

“Are you serious?” he interrupted, looking at her.

“John, it’s okay. There’s a steakhouse if you’d rather…”

“Do I have an accent or something?”

“Huh?” Emily asked, angling her head sideways in confusion. “An accent?”
