She felt tears sting her eyes, because she couldn’t imagine what he must have gone through or felt like… or how much of his own private hell he had to endure.

“It’s incredible…” she breathed, reaching out to touch his shoulder in the small cabin of the plane, still looking out the window… only to see his head spin towards her in shock – right before he turned back, focusing on flying the plane.

“We’re losing the sunlight quickly,” he began, his voice sounding confused and surprised. “Do you want me to spin around one more time or…?”

“Let’s fly back or land and find someplace to have dinner together,” she offered gently. “I want to talk, hold your hand, and hear all about how it was to grow up here, because I didn’t see any roads…” she ended her sentence in a half-hearted joke, simply trying to lighten the intensity of the moment as he reached up to touch her hand where it lay on his shoulder.

“You are an incredible person,” he murmured quietly, pulling back on something that looked like a little steering wheel, causing them to go up higher into the air.

“I don’t know about that,” she replied as he finally looked at her. “I just think you are worth knowing, John.”

“I feel the same, Emily.”

CHAPTER9

EMILY

As they flew back, she encouraged John to talk to her about himself, and listened keenly as he spoke. He’d been through so much, and was so incredibly strong, that it made her realize what a blessing her own youth was and how ungrateful she was in realizing that she had two parents that loved her…

… Annoyed her – but loved her.

He couldn’t say the same, and her heart went out to him, but before she knew it, they were landing at Flyboys and taxiing on the runway.

“And we’re here,” he said easily, turning to smile at her in the shadowy cabin of the Cessna. The only light outside came from the moon and one floodlight on an extremely tall electrical pole at the end of the building.

“What are you in the mood for?” she asked, remembering she’d invited him to dinner… only to have him give her a lazy soft smile that made her toes curl happily as he cut the engines.

“Is it wrong that I want to sit here like a sixteen-year-old boy on his first date… instead of a thirty-one-year-old man who can’t decide if he needs Tums for his heartburn or not?”

Emily laughed easily at how honest and real he was – only to hear him chuckle as she heard his seatbelt unbuckle. She assumed he was getting out of the plane and also unbuckled… only to have him tug her over bodily into his lap.

“I like how you fit,” he whispered softly, gazing up at her.

“I’m going to crush your legs.”

“I’ll die a happy man,” he countered, smiling.

“Not flattering in the slightest, mister,” she muttered, glaring at him and raising an eyebrow… only to have him laugh in amusement at her.

“Do you want to be flattered, my sweet Emily?” he breathed. “Shall I tell you sweet nothings, so you melt into my arms?”

“It tends to work better than telling a girl she’ll crush his legs but ‘it’s worth it’…” she smiled at him as he grinned easily.

“You’re a little slip of nothing, and we both know it.”

“Ha!”

“You are…” he retorted laugh. “I mean, I can practically put my hands around your waist…”

“And my top,” she muttered flatly.

“Ohhh,” he exclaimed in a hushed voice, grinning. “Do I get to touch your top?”

“Nooooo,” she balked, blushing profusely. “You most certainly do not.”

“Should I measure your bottom, my pretty girl?”

“Absolutely not! It’s bigger than anything else on me.”
