Yours,

Hey John,

I’m trying to take care of myself and know my emails have been short. I’m staring at almost thirteen hundred files of tax documentation left to prepare, and not all of them are easy. I’m crazy, stupid, busy… but its making time pass fast for me.

I would love for you to call. Please do, because I need to hear your voice.

Oh my gosh, I just got handed five more files…

We’ll talk this weekend.

XOXO,

Emily

Lookingup as the chime sounded on her door, Emily hesitated to see the delivery man standing there looking at her questioningly. She didn’t have time to fool around with him dawdling.

“Just put it on the counter unless you need a signature.”

“Are you Emily Marks?”

“Yes. Do you need a signature?”

“No… but you have a fan, I guess.”

“What?” she asked bluntly, his words catching her attention as she looked up again. “What’s going on?”

“I’m just a GrubHub driver, lady… and was told to leave this for the ‘most beautiful woman in the world’.

Emily snatched the receipt from him and stared at it in disbelief. Sure enough – it was an online order to deliver dinner to her, and in the notes section of the order was the most touching thing ever, printed on the receipt for anyone to see…

Look for the prettiest smile, on the most beautiful woman in the world… who’s buried under an avalanche of papers. Tell her that John said to ‘stop and eat dinner’ because he’s worried that she’s working too hard.

“What is this?” Emily asked tearfully, seeing her hands tremble.

“Krazy Cajun’s etouffee, garlic bread, and bread pudding. There was anAbitaon the order, but we can’t deliver booze, so they had to refund that part of the online order. Listen lady – I gotta go to my next delivery, okay?”

Emily nodded, silent, still holding the receipt in her hands.

No one had ever done this for her.

Her parents would occasionally drop off a meal, or come by to check to see if she needed groceries or anything else… but no one ever put on the receipt to ‘look for the most beautiful woman’publicly.

The driver probably thought John was insane, because she hadn’t washed her hair in four days, and it was pulled back in a claw hairclip on her head to keep it out of her face.

Opening the paper bag, she took a deep breath and sighed with happiness. She pulled out the foil container and removed the cardboard lid to see the rice smothered in crawfish etouffee.

Removing the other lids, she stepped away from her desk and shoveled in several big bites before realizing she was crying.

… Sloppy, noisily, sobbing as she ate, rubbing her wrist against her eye sockets to wipe away the tears. She was so tired, her eyes ached, and she was so terribly lonely that it hurt right now…

To think that John was thinking about her, cared for her, and was worried about her from clear on the other side of the globe? If she wasn’t halfway infatuated with the handsome man… she was well on her way.
