John had just clickedsend on his email when his phone rang. Answering it, he hesitated as he heard a familiar voice…
Hot Cakes – his new brother-in-law.
“Hey… I’ve got about ten minutes to talk before I’ve got to hit the chow line,” Hot Cakes began, and chuckled. “I hear from Karen that there was a significant change in status…brother.”
“Wow. Word travels fast,” John said shakily, laughing.
“Are you happy?”
“Can I be honest?”
“Always…”
“I’m scared to death,” John admitted. “We got married and apparently made a mess of it, so we married again to clear up any confusion between…”
“Made a mess? How?” Jace interrupted quickly.
“We got plastered and didn’t remember any of it,” John uttered, hearing his friend chuckle in understanding. “Please don’t say a word.”
“Never. I won’t tell a soul and you know that, or you wouldn’t have said anything to me.”
“I married her again, the right way this time, and… and I’m scared, now that I’ve had time to think about things a little more.”
“Do you love her?”
“Incredibly so…” he admitted.
“What are you scared of?”
“Disappointing or hurting her,” John confessed quietly. “Jace… I don’t know how things went last night between us, and neither does she. We were both blackout drunk… and what if there is a kid?”
“Does worrying change anything?” Jace said quietly in a hushed voice.
“No.”
“Are you in a hurry to… you know…”
“No, because I want her to be happy, instead of feeling like she is stuck with me.”
“First off – I don’t think she feels like she is ‘stuck’with you, because the Emily I know would have dumped you right away if she wasn’t happy. Secondly? When love is involved, it changes things.”
“What do you mean?”
“That’s why I asked if you loved Emily. Let that feeling be your guide and just do what you think is right for her. If you put her first in everything, thenherhappiness becomesyourhappiness… and life is good after that, my friend.”
“I feel like an idiot even talking about this.”
“John…” Jace said quietly, causing John to hesitate, because they rarely used their first names on base. “You’re my friend, my brother in the air – and now my brother-in-law by marriage. Everyone needs to have someone to talk to in their lives… and there is no shame in that. Daughters go to their mothers; I spoke with my father about Karen for very much the same reason… which is why I called you when my wife emailed me.”
