“Of course! I won’t say a word.” Elena went back to her seat with a giggle. “Although I think I might have telegraphed it to everyone in the restaurant.”

“Just don’t do it again.”

“Noted.” Elena laughed. “I’m honored that you would tell me along with your parents.”

“Elena, we’ve been friends for twenty years. Of course I would tell you once we found out.” Jenny picked up her drink and took a sip. “There’s also other news that I have to share with you, too… Darren and I are planning on moving.”

“What?”

“We’re not going far. Just to Everett.”

Elena stared. “You’re going to leave Seattle?”

“Like I said, we’re not going far. Everett’s just outside of Seattle. But Darren’s been given a promotion, and he’s always wanted to live in a more suburban area.” Jenny looked dreamy-eyed as she talked about her husband. “It’s a beautiful place, and just the environment for a baby. We’ll be coming into Seattle all the time, but that’s our dream.”

Elena could feel herself faltering. Dream. She had no idea what those were anymore. Wait, where had that come from?

She managed to keep the smile on her face. “Well, I’m really happy for you, Jenny. You deserve that.”

“Thanks, Elena.” Jenny then grimaced and eased herself out of the booth. “I’m just going to the restroom. My stomach hasn’t been happy lately. Someone should have told me morning sickness wasn’t actually restricted to the morning.”

“Do you want me to wait for you before we order?”

“Please. I won’t be long.”

“We can forgo any food…”

“Don’t be silly. I’ll be fine as long as I keep it light.” Jenny waved away her concerns. “You have a look at the menu, and then we can order when I get back.”

She walked away, and Elena reached for the menu that had been lying between them on the table. As she scanned the different items, though, she found that the words weren’t really sinking in. She couldn’t think of anything except Jenny’s joy and future dreams. Her best friend from school was moving on with her life. She had been married for a year now, and the couple were moving to greener pastures. Elena should be happy about that, but instead she was feeling empty. Sad, even.

Jenny wasn’t the first person in Elena’s social circle to have said that she was getting married, or pregnant, or doing something new with their life. Everyone around her was going through the same thing, while Elena was still the same as always. She had had the same job for ten years, a job she loved, but she had been doing the same thing ever since graduating university. And while she got the perks of watching free sport games, there was nothing different and exciting in her life. It was just…monotonous. Nothing interesting happened to her anymore, unless you counted her mother trying to set her up with strangers.

She had gotten herself stuck in a rut. And Jenny’s news was making her realize it.

For the first time in years, Elena felt lost. Could she carry on like this? Or should she do something to change things up a bit?

Could she take a chance herself? After all, she was being offered a chance for something different. Was that life telling her she needed to change things up?

Elena had no idea. She just knew that she couldn’t remain in the same monotony for the rest of her life. Something had to give.

She would have to take a leap and hope she didn’t end up drowning.

CHAPTER5

JASON

Jason could hear his phone ringing as he left the bathroom, but he couldn’t tell where it was coming from. God, he needed to stop putting his cellphone down somewhere and forgetting to pick it up again. He was going to lose it again if he wasn’t careful.

Now was not the time. Elena was going to be arriving at the airport in Lincoln soon, and it was an almost two-hour drive from Wenstown. He needed to get a move on if he wanted to get there on time.

Where was that damn phone?

The ringing stopped, and Jason groaned. What was he going to do now? Putting his backpack in the hall, he searched his pockets on the off chance that it had ended up in the recesses of his clothes. Nothing there. He went into his office. Still nothing. It was like his phone had vanished into thin air.

He just had the worst possible timing.

Then the ringing started up again. Thank God for that. Jason followed the noise and found it next to his car keys on the kitchen counter. Groaning, he snatched both of them up.
