Before Jason could respond, his mind still turning over what Carl had just said, the coach was going back into the physical therapy room, leaving Jason standing in the hall. What did he mean by that last comment? It felt like an insult aimed in his direction.

It was tame compared to the things he had been reading all morning. And he hadn’t even gotten to the emails yet. Jason was still bracing himself for that.

He went back upstairs and into the lobby outside his office. Melinda was there, barely looking up as she typed. Jason couldn’t believe how fast her fingers were flying over the keys.

“Melinda, do you have the resumes for the staff positions? Carl McLaren said you would have them somewhere?”

“Certainly, Mr. Munro.” Melinda stood up and went to the filing cabinet. Opening the middle drawer, she got out a hefty file and brought it over to him. “Here you go. There’s a list of the positions that need to be filled on the top, and the recommended salaries for each one.”

“You’re more efficient than I anticipated, Melinda.”

Melinda shrugged and started to walk away. Jason followed her to her desk.

“Carl also mentioned something about a person he wanted on the support team. A woman. Do you know who he’s talking about?”

“Oh, her. I’m surprised Carl’s still trying to bring her in.”

“He’s done it before?”

“Apparently they met a few years ago and he was very impressed with her. He’s tried to get her to apply a few times, but she’s always turned him down.”

“Any reason why?”

Melinda raised her eyebrows. “We’re in the middle of Nebraska. She lives in Seattle and works for the hockey team, the football team, the baseball team… She’s in demand and has plenty to keep her busy. Why would she want to come here?”

“For the scenery?”

“That’s not enough for a city girl like her.”

Jason couldn’t deny that he was intrigued. This sounded like a challenge. Carl had said he wanted this person on his staff, and Jason wanted to get into Carl’s good books. He had a feeling this might be the way to do that.

“Is there a resume for her?”

“No, but she has a website you can look at. Everything is there.” Melinda nodded at the file in Jason’s arms. “It’s all in there as well.”

“I…thanks.” Jason headed towards his office door. “Is Mrs. Munro still in the building?”

“As far as I know, yes.”

“We’ll be heading out to lunch. If you want to take your lunch break now, go for it. Just be back at the normal time.”

“Thank you, sir. And Mr. Munro?”

Jason stopped as he was opening the door, turning back to his assistant. “Yes?”

“Be careful dealing with Carl’s…acquaintance.” Melinda smiled, the first proper smile Jason had seen on her. “According to him, she’s a bit of a firecracker.”

“I can handle firecrackers.”

Her eyes glinted as she shut down her computer and began to put her things into her bag. “I’m sure you can.”

Jason didn’t know what she meant by that, and he didn’t have time to dwell on it, either. The club needed to be built back up again, and if it meant bringing in some of the desired people, he had to do it.

He just hoped that he could prove that he wasn’t as useless as Carl McLaren thought he was. The man didn’t even need to say it to make his opinion clear.
