She was learning more about her friend than she wanted. Like knowing that he would pursue two women at the same time. Yes, she had tried to back out of sleeping with him again, but he’d all but begged her to think about it, and now he was chasing another woman instead of waiting like he said he would.

Maybe it wasn’t flirty. Was she overthinking it? Yes, maybe. Now she was overthinking her overthinking. Ugh. Apparently needing to punish herself, she picked up her phone and read his next message.

E:I was playing poker and lost every single hand.

K:Oh no! I hope it wasn’t a lot of money.

E:No, we keep it friendly, no big bets. It’s all for fun.

E:Any plans for after your exciting laundry journey?

K:Need to eat some dinner, haven’t decided what.

E:Cooking or ordering?

K:Cooking.

E:Can’t help you then. I don’t know what you have.

K:Something easy, for sure.

E:LOL.

She went to the kitchen to see what she had to cook. It was late already, but she needed to eat.

Poking through her freezer, she found some popcorn shrimp and threw it in the oven. She loved those little things. Happy now that she was about to eat, she went back to the app.

Before she could send her message, her phone rang. Evan. She stared at it, almost letting it go to voicemail before giving in and answering.

“Hello?” she asked.

“Hey,” he said.

The line went quiet and she waited for him to say something. He didn’t.

“Is everything okay?” she asked.

“I know you probably don’t want to hear from me. I just…miss you,” Evan told her.

She slid into a chair. It was the same way she felt. “I’ve missed you, too.”

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“Cooking some popcorn shrimp.” Thankfully she hadn’t sent the message and told him that as K.

“You’re so weird,” Evan laughed.

“Can’t help it. They’re good.” He liked to tease her about liking them. “I thought you were at poker.”

“Keeping tabs on me?” he teased.

“Lauren invited me over. I wasn’t feeling it.”

“I’m sorry,” he told her.

“Don’t be.” It wasn’t all his fault. It was hers.

The line went silent again and she had a thought. She wondered what he would do if K texted him right now. Putting him on speaker, she sent a quick message.
