“Have you looked into anyone else that had bad dates? Like maybe someone was super mad and crossed paths with her?”

“We did. No one stood out.” Evan sighed, nothing had stood out in anything.

Luke looked back to the court before lowering his voice and turning to them again. “Have we looked at Cade’s dad again? I mean he was pissed, and I was shocked he let any of it go.”

Evan scratched his beard as he thought about it. “I’d say probably not. I think he and Cade have come to an understanding since them. Plus, I never really understood the drama there to begin with.”

“Separation of classes. It’s one thing to fool around with a secretary; it’s quite another to openly date one.” Luke shrugged as if it all made sense.

“Hey.” Jake punched his arm.

“I didn’t say I agreed with him. Damn. We all love Lauren.” Luke rubbed his arm.

“Yeah, but it wasn’t his kid. He already openly doesn’t like Jake, so it shouldn’t have mattered.”

“But, it was the same time that Cade started standing up to him. Plus, I was there almost every time that he did because I’d try to pull him out of meetings with his father,” Jake said.

“Maybe. I still think it’s old news, but it’s worth looking into,” Evan conceded.

“Should we tell Cade?” Luke asked.

“Let’s see if we come up with anything to talk about first. I don’t want him to know about it if we come up empty. There’s no reason to add more stress to that relationship,” Jake said. “I’ll get my guys on it today.”

“Thanks,” Evan said. His phone rang and he reached for it, seeing Kayla’s name. “It’s her,” he told Jake.

“See? It’s going to be fine, just answer it.”

ChapterTwenty-Two

Evan

The phone call was anything but good news. Now, an hour later, everyone was gathered at Evan’s place, piecing information together.

The call from Kayla had been to tell him about a threat that she got. Everyone had rallied together and shown up. They were going to show their strength in numbers, and everyone had a skill to be used.

“Read it again,” Ryker demanded.

“Send it to the projector, Kayla,” Evan told her. “We can all spread out in the media room and she can put it up on the screen.”

Kayla nodded and picked up her laptop, leading the way. He rarely used this room but in his defense, it came with the property and wasn’t the reason he bought it. For now, it would serve as a good command station for everyone.

“Catherine’s here, can someone go let her in?” Cade said looking at his phone.

“I’ll go.” Ryker headed off before anyone could say anything about it.

“Weird,” Kayla muttered.

“Those two? A little weird,” Evan agreed.

She was still being a little cold to him and didn’t want to be alone with him, he’d noticed, but she was talking to him again, which was a step up from where they were just hours ago.

Cade stood in the middle of the room, reading the email on the screen, ignoring everyone around him as he did. Evan watched him, waiting to see what he came up with.

“This implies that they were able to get into your computer systems during the break-in. They didn’t see you so I guess they didn’t know you were there?” Cade asked.

“I don’t think they did. They didn’t touch the computers though. All the reservations and stuff are on tablets, and we lock those up at the end of night so they weren’t even damaged,” Kayla explained.

“They want money but there’s no return of information. It doesn’t seem that they thought this through at all.” Cade looked back and forth between his phone and the screen.
