Shit. Just her luck that her distraction from Evan would be about Evan. “I know. He called already.”

“He did? I mean of course he did. How are you?” Lauren stammered.

“I’m fine. Why?” Did Lauren know? If she did, who else did? Her heart raced and she stood to pace her small office space.

“You see, when we were there together, I noticed that there was something between you two. I was actually calling to see if you would be Jake’s pick for Evan?”

Kayla tripped over her thoughts and nearly fell all the way to the floor. She managed to catch herself on the wall and stand up, leaning her back against it.

She pulled the phone away from her ear and pressed it to her racing heart as she struggled to put her thoughts together. It was a lost cause.

Bringing the phone back to her ear, she swallowed before answering. “I’m not sure that would be the smartest idea.”

“I thought you might say that. Can you at least think it over and get back to me? Jake doesn’t get to go first, which is bullshit if you ask me. I think it’s a great idea. You two have chemistry, and I think you’d be missing out if you didn’t act on it,” Lauren rambled.

“Sure. I’ll let you know something soon.” She tried and failed to feign enthusiasm again.

“Hey, no pressure. If you really don’t want to, that’s fine. I know a few people from the office who would probably go for it if Jake can’t come up with anyone.”

“Can I let you go? I have another call coming in,” Kayla interrupted her.

“Oh, sure! Listen just let me know one way or the other. No pressure,” she emphasized.

“I will.”

Kayla ended the call and stared down at her phone. She needed a secretary to screen these calls so she could avoid all this.

She dropped down into her chair and flipped her phone to silent. That was quite enough of that for right now.

It wasn’t that she didn’t want Evan to date. That was inevitable and she’d be a little jealous, sure. She wouldn’t do anything to interfere, unless something was wrong. She was better than that.

However, she didn’t want to be directly involved in him dating. Was it too much to ask?

She needed a drink, and maybe her own date. Maybe that’s what she was missing, a date that wasn’t lunch with Evan as a friend.

Kayla shook her head at herself. When would she do that? In the imaginary downtime that she had? No. That wasn’t going to solve her problem.

Lauren’s offer was tempting, but there was no way she could accept it, or so she tried to convince herself. It would be unethical somehow for her to know who her date was and him not to know.

He’d probably figure it out quickly too, and then she’d have to explain herself. That wouldn’t work out for her very well.

There was no way she could commit to a blind date with Evan. Right? She struggled to answer her own inner thoughts with rational ones.

Giving up on trying to make any of the last hour make sense, she sat down and did what she knew best—work. Unfortunately the top item on her list now was Evan’s profile.

She bit her lip. What if she made her own and just tested their compatibility? It would be a start, right? If they weren’t compatible then maybe it was just lust, and she needed to move on from thinking about him.

Kayla had done all the assessments before, more than once since setting them up. She regularly helped calibrate them to make sure they were still accurate, and she helped to set a baseline of how often people should retake it.

She looked around, making sure no one was about to come into her office before she started. In moments, she had her profile created and had uploaded her most recent assessments. Now it was time to bring Evan’s online and see who he matched with first.

ChapterThree

Kayla

In the end, Kayla couldn’t bring herself to match their tests and see how compatible they were. She was so worried they’d be incompatible that her stomach had been upset all night.

She planned for a long run this morning to clear her mind while enjoying the scenery and music in her headphones. Getting ready, she headed out her apartment building and began her walk to the park entrance. Running here was a waste of effort with too many people in the sidewalk and stops waiting for a crosswalk light to change.
