“We will get to the bottom of it. Everyone is working on it that we know. Something will happen to confirm they never had access to the system.”

“What if they did?”

“Then we will cross that bridge when we get to it. I really don’t think they were able to get in, though.”

“I don’t either, but I’m not willing to risk everything on thoughts, Evan.”

“We aren’t paying them right now,” Evan told her.

“I can’t pay them anyway. We need to come up with something that we can do if they got in.”

“Look, this system is secure. We know this. It was the main reason we chose it.”

Kayla shrugged. It didn’t matter what he said. She needed to make a plan for something bad to happen. She felt it coming and couldn’t ignore it.

She checked her phone once more to see if she had heard from the blackmailer again. “Evan, they wrote me again.” Her hands shook as she tried to click on the email.

Evan came up behind her and rubbed her arms, lending her some of his strength as he looked over her shoulder.

Kayla,

I hope you’ve had enough time to get the money. My banking details are enclosed in the attachment. If not paid, I will release the details to the gossips.

Information Holder

“I’ll call everyone.”

ChapterTwenty-Four

Kayla

Kayla didn’t stay at Evan’s much longer after they’d gotten the email. She also hadn’t been back to the restaurant. The contractors had started work, and she checked their progress using the cameras for now, not wanting to get in the way.

She officially had doors again and all the glass had been replaced. They had also started tearing things out of the dining room that were too damaged to repair. It broke her heart to watch on the camera, and there was no way she could go see it in person right now.

A bottle of wine was her company for tonight as she made an elaborate dinner from scratch. It was taking her mind off things and giving her hands something to do.

Evan had called earlier to say that there was still no update from anyone. Her blackmailer hadn’t given her a time to send the money, and Catherine’s friend was trying to get information on the account itself.

So far, all was quiet. The fact that nothing was happening made her more nervous than if they were getting any information. It was as if they were in the calm before the storm, waiting on the next bad thing to happen.

She sipped her wine as she waited for her water to come to a boil for the pasta she was making. Everything else was done, and she was ready to eat, tempted to turn her phone off for a few minutes while she did.

Everyone had convinced her to wait it out. That the threat was nothing and they had no information to hand out. Catherine’s guy had an emergency so they hadn’t been able to confirm anything.

Her stomach was in knots just wondering at the choice she had made to ignore the emails. It wasn’t like she could have paid them anyway. The restaurant was successful, but it didn’t have half a million dollars sitting around.

Sipping her wine, she waited for what was going to happen next. She hated it.

Her water boiled, and she dropped the pasta in just as her phone started ringing.

“Hi Catherine,” she said as she answered.

“Hey. How are you?” she asked.

“I don’t know. It’s just a lot. I owe you an apology for the other day, by the way. Sorry for being such a bitch.”

Catherine laughed. “You already apologized but there’s no need. You’re under a lot of stress right now so I get it.”
