Information Holder

“Information holder?” Evan shook his head. “Should we write them back?”

“No,” Catherine told him. “There are bigger things to worry about right now. I’m adjusting the plan, but I have another idea I want to work on. I’ll let you both know what it is when I work it all the way out.”

“Can you check in with your hacker guy?” Kayla asked.

“I emailed him on the way over. As soon as he has something, he will let us know.”

Gathering gave Evan a blurb to send to all the emails that had come in and set it as the auto-reply. While he worked on that, Kayla emailed all the employees to let them know that they were working on this and would be in touch soon with more details.

Kayla then reached out to her assistant to get her in the loop of what exactly was going on. Any questions that came her way were to be directed to Catherine instead. It didn’t take long and she had completed everything.

“Did you ever eat?” Catherine said, looking up at Kayla.

“No.” She should at least put it away. There was always tomorrow.

Standing, Kayla arched her back and stretched.

“Go ahead and eat,” Evan encouraged.

“I’m just going to put it away. Not hungry anymore.”

“You should eat something,” he urged.

The thing was, she wanted to stay mad at him but couldn’t. She should be annoyed that he was kind of telling her what to do, but she knew deep down that it was out of concern.

“I’ll have a banana,” she relented. It was too late for a big meal now, and she was too stressed for it.

He nodded and went back to the computer. Too quickly, she put dinner away and loaded her dishwasher. Joining them at the table again, she sat next to Evan and checked on the emails.

“They’re bad, aren’t they?” she asked.

“They aren’t good,” Evan told her.

The one he had open was someone threatening to sue her, so not good was an understatement to say the least.

Catherine’s phone rang. “Oh, it’s him!” She snatched it up and answered.

Kayla and Evan watched as she talked to him. She asked lots of questions and then finally asked if he could email her the details.

She grinned as she ended the call. “There is no reason to think that anyone accessed the system. He added that you should work less, Kayla. Nothing out of the ordinary had been done and there are no instances of information being downloaded by anyone. That includes the backup servers.”

Kayla swayed and Evan spun sideways, pulling her into his lap. “It’s okay, baby. That’s really good news,” he soothed.

She barely registered Catherine excusing herself as the stress and worry melted away. Nothing was done by any means, but at least she could confirm there was no breach. All the security on her end was still in place and no information was out there.

Evan continued to hold her, his hand making small circles on her back as he whispered soothing words to her. She relaxed into him for the moment, telling herself it wouldn’t be for long. She just needed the support right now.

Kayla took a deep breath and stood. “Sorry,” she mumbled as she slid into the other chair.

“You looked like you were about to fall,” Evan told her.

“I was. It means a lot to know that the information hasn’t gotten out.”

“It does. We can keep looking into who the blackmailer is, but they can only threaten. There’s nothing they can actually do. It’s good news.”

Catherine poked her head around the corner. “You guys, decent?” she teased.
