Evan ended the call right as he pulled the last piece of French toast off the pan. He hoped today continued in the good way it was trending. They needed this good news.

“Morning.” Kayla walked into the kitchen.

“Good morning. I made French toast.” Evan pointed to the two plates on the island. “Literally just finished. Coffee too.”

She had clearly not been out of bed long, still looking a little confused. He wanted to pull her to him, hold her, carry her back to bed. None of which he could do until she made up her mind about him. He just wished it weren’t taking so long.

“Thanks,” she mumbled and walked past him to the bar.

“I’ll get you some coffee.” He poured her a cup and took the seat next to her on the bar with his own. “I called Jake this morning. He said they have two leads they are running down this morning. With any luck, one of them is her and they will have her arrested.”

“I hope so,” Kayla said between bites. “Thanks for this. It’s really good.”

“You’re welcome.”

His phone rang and he pulled it out of his pocket. Catherine was calling.

“Hello. You’re on speaker with me and Kayla,” he answered.

“I’ve tried Kayla a few times this morning, but she didn’t answer. I was going to ask you to check on her, but I guess she’s fine.”

“Sorry. I put my phone on do not disturb when I went to bed last night,” Kayla said.

“All good. Can you guys be at my office in an hour and a half?”

“Is everything okay?” Evan asked.

“No new developments,” Catherine said.

“Jake’s investigators have two leads they are running down. With any luck at all, they will track her down today,” Evan said.

“God, I hope so,” Catherine said. “I’ll see you two shortly.”

Evan ended the call and went back to his breakfast. “I’ll clean this up before I head out. Unless you want to carpool?”

Kayla shook her head. “You go, I will clean it up since you cooked and then get ready.”

He nodded and took his plate to the sink. “Are we ever going to talk?” Evan asked her.

“After this is done, Evan. I can’t do this right now,” she told him.

“Holding you to it,” he said.

He got his shoes on and left her alone in her apartment. She hadn’t said no, so he’d take that as optimistic and let it go. She did have a lot going on, that much was true, and he didn’t want to add to it, but it felt like they were dancing around each other.

It didn’t take long to get home and shower. He checked in on work while he passed the time before going to Catherine’s. After answering a few emails, he called Catherine.

“Hey,” she answered.

“Should I tell everyone to come? It just occurred to me to ask.”

“Probably not. I told Cade because he’s upstairs, but I didn’t think to tell anyone else. What’s Kayla say?” she asked.

“I didn’t ask her yet. Thought I would check with you before asking her. She’s still at home, I had to come home and change.”

“Cade might come down, but I think that’s probably all we need for now. We can make sure everyone else knows after.”

“Okay. Just double-checking.”
