“That’s okay. I will find a place to park. Just let me know when you’re ready.”

Evan nodded and stepped out at a small bar not far from his house. He’d never been here before, so he took in the area as he walked up.

He was led to a stool at the bar, explaining to the hostess that he was waiting on someone else. She had said she’d mark the seat next to him for her. Evan ordered a beer and settled in for a wait.

Two beers and half an hour later, she was late. He pulled out his phone and looked in the app to see if she had messaged him. It was empty since their dinner conversation where he hadn’t replied other than to accept the date request.

He shrugged. If she wasn’t coming, then it didn’t really matter. He sent her a message instead.

E:Sorry I missed you. Looks like it didn’t work out again. I have to confess I only agreed to meet you to let you know, in person, that I wasn’t going to continue our dates. We are both too busy right now and honestly, I fell for someone else. She may not have fallen for me yet, but I wanted to be honest with you tonight and explain.

He hit send and picked up his third beer. It was already ordered and, once again, nothing had gone as planned, so he was going to make the best of it.

A few minutes later, the hostess returned to the seat next to him, and much to his complete surprise, Kayla slid onto the stool. A yellow sundress and a denim jacket greeted him with much more cheer than her fake smile.

“What are you doing here?” he asked. Not that he cared. He’d prefer to be sitting here with her over anyone else.

“You seem surprised to see me,” she said.

Confused, Evan shook his head. “Well, yeah. I was supposed to be meeting someone else, but I’m so glad you’re here instead.”

Kayla ignored him and ordered a drink of her own. He stayed quiet until her drink was delivered, watching her and trying to figure out what was going on.

She took a sip of her mixed drink and looked at him over the rim of her glass. When she set it down, she gave him the saddest smile he’d ever seen on her.

“Hi, E.” She held out her hand. “Nice to meet you. I’m K.”

ChapterTwenty-Eight

Kayla

“You’re K?” Evan choked out.

“One and the same,” she told him.

In her head, this had gone differently. She was all anger and fire, but now that she was here, most of her fight was gone. She’d debated not even coming.

Emotions crossed Evan’s face quickly before a smile settled in. “Of course it was you. That makes so much sense now.”

“You aren’t disappointed?” Kayla was the one to be shocked now.

“Hell, no. I’ve been trying to be something more with you since before this started, and you’re telling me that we were kind of dating the whole time?”

Kayla hid behind another sip of her drink. Thousands of scenarios had played out in her mind about how tonight was going to go, and this wasn’t one of them. Now she didn’t know what to do.

“Seriously, Evan.” She set her drink back down on the bar. “You were trying to sleep with me and continue this blind date nonsense. You’re busted.”

His jaw fell. “I came here to tell K in person that we weren’t a match.”

“Sure, now that you’re caught red-handed you would say that.” Kayla rolled her eyes at him.

“What? No!” He said a little too loudly and had other customers turning to look at them.

“Come on, Evan. You were all chatty last weekend and then called me. Then as soon as you got off the phone with me, you agreed to this date.”

“First off, you set me up for this. Second, I messaged K because Cade encouraged me to do it and I had a few beers. I was upset over YOU and decided to see if I had any connection with the person in the app. I didn’t. I made up my mind then to tell her I didn’t want to date.”

“You could have done that in the app, Evan.”
