Only now, when I turn around to torture myself one last time… He’s on one knee.

And he’s opening a small box that glints with a million different sparkles.

“Vanessa, I love you, too. And I need to you to go back to California. Not only to follow your dreams and become everything you’re meant to be, but I need you to collect the keys to my brand-new Range Rover.”

Aiden flashes a bright smile at me. The passengers laugh. Some gasp at his words and I’m suddenly wishing we weren’t being watched by hundreds of people. I can’t stop my neck from pulsing as his body hunches over a huge diamond ring that catches my gaze.

Aiden sees me look at the ring and he shakes his head as if forcing his brain to re-engage with his mouth.

“Oh, yeah… Right. And will you marry me?”

I shake my head, laughter escaping my lips.

I launch forward, grinning. Beaming. Nodding.

“Yes! Yes I will marry you!” I jump into his arms and Aiden catches me.

I smother him with a kiss that feels as explosive as the applause breaking out around the boarding gate. I loop my arms around his neck, leaning in to deepen the kiss. My body is shaking, but when Aiden guides me down and slides the ring on my finger, I look up at him with the biggest smile I’ve ever worn.

“You know… Maybe you’re not so different from all the other athletes. For someone who’s dreamt of this day for so long, I would have thought your proposal speech would have been better than that.”

Aiden chuckles. “You would think so… I’m just so excited about my new car!”

I slap his arm and my mouth gapes up at him. “Oh, and don’t worry about the engagement!”

He pulls me into his arms and scrunches me tight. “I’m only joking sweetheart. But trust me, if you had to speed around Vancouver to win over someone’s heart once and for all in my cruddy heap of junk, you’d be excited too.”

I shake my head, beaming up at my fiancé.

“I love you, Aiden.”

He smiles and drops a kiss to my forehead.

“I love you too, Princess.”

EPILOGUE

Vanessa

ONE YEAR LATER

I pull the cushion tight around my chest.

“This is it,” I say, snuggling into Aiden’s chest. “This is the last scene. Forever. Oh my God, I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it’s finished…”

The television shines in his eyes as I look up at him. He’s completely gripped to the screen, hardly moving an inch.

“Babe? Did you-”

“Shhhh… You’re ruining it!”

He pats the top of my head and shushes me again when I open my mouth to tell him off.Typical fucking athlete. If I hadn’t missed him so much, that alone would be enough to make me tackle him to the ground and smother him with kisses.

It’s been a tough few months for us.

Not in the sense that our relationship is on rocky territory. Quite the opposite actually – we’ve never been stronger. I guess that’s what a long-distance relationship can do. Sometimes it breaks couples apart. They can’t handle the discipline and strength it takes to make it work.

But me and Aiden?
