Axel

The red lights ignite, and I burst out onto the ice alongside my teammates. Roaring fire blasts into the air, a hot corridor of flames guiding the way to centre ice. The hard rock theme song blares out around the arena and the crowd are on their feet, screaming and yelling for us.

I look up the stands.

Shielding my eyes from the bright flashing lights, all I can see are smiling faces. Grown men are yelling and throwing fists into the air. Women are ripping their shirts off, their gorgeous tits bouncing. Parents are shielding their kids eyes with their jaws dropped at the scene around the stands… Poor delicate kids don’t know what’s going on.

Welcome to the real world.

It’s my world. It’s my arena. It’s my life.

“Falls Creek… The time has come…”I begin the warmup on the ice alongside my team as the voice of the stadium announcer echoes over the top of the famous heavy metal riffs of Kirk Hammett. “Please welcome the Falcons to the ice for the very first time!”

I try to concentrate on the quick sprints the team coaches are pushing us through, but I can’t help but smile up at the stands. This is what we’ve been building to. Forget the newspaper articles. Forget the national news painting us as the new villains of the National Hockey League.

Here, in Falcon Central Arena, we’re heroes.

“Number four… He’s big. He’s tough. And he likes it rough…”Loud squeals from every lady in the grandstand cries out. “Make him welcome… He’s The King. He’s Kane Daaaaaavidson!”

A loud roar tingles my ears. Kane raises his stick, the red jersey making him look even bigger than usual. We’re all announced one by one, each player met with a massive cheer.

My belly is exploding with pride. I’ve worked my entire damn life for this. I’m leading a team in the NHL. This is my team. It’s my turn to show the world what I’m made of. Finally, finally,I’ve got a group of men who won’t take a hit without getting back up and laying two in return. No one will so much as look twice at us without feeling the brunt we offer. A group of rejects, sent to a small town in the middle of nowhere to build a team of their own.

And I couldn’t be prouder.

Now though… Now it’s time to stop the talking. It’sgametime.

“And leading the line for your very own home-town heroes…”My fingers sting as I grip my stick. I tap the ‘C’ on my jersey and skid to a stop on the ice. My lips stiffen, pride filling my broad chest. “He’s your captain. Our hero and the main man… He’s ‘The Ax’,Axeeeeeel….. Lewis!”

I thrust my stick in the air and pump my arm. The crowd chants and I’m bashing my own chest with a clenched fist. ‘Fal-cons! Fal-cons!’I skate around, not stopping my pumping action. The arena erupts, chanting wildly as I circle the opposing team like I’m a fucking falcon gliding through the air.

I can feel the adrenaline fuelling my blood. It’s pushing it faster and faster through my heart, sending it speeding around my body. The crowd are louder than ever. The referee is standing in the middle of the ice, struggling to gain control of the game already – we haven’t even dropped the puck.

“WE’RE HERE, BABY!”

I rise to the edge of the perimeter, smashing a fist against the protective glass. I’m playing to the crowd, roaring like a fucking lion. It’s all part of it. If we can win them over, we’re a chance at making the playoffs.

Fuck what the media thinks.

They’ve told the world we’re the rebellion, and fuck me… With the way I’m feeling right now, perhaps they’re right.

The game starts and we’re out of the blocks with two quick goals. Ryder Smith was told he’s too big and clumsy to make anything of himself as a professional hockey player. He’s smacked one past the goaltender and set the second goal up five minutes into his professional debut. Eat thatChannel Five.

Gabriel Tonks is just as fierce. He’s in the penalty box now, though. A referee has been ordered to stand guard and keep him locked in there, but it doesn’t stop Gabriel from standing on the benches and working the crowd into a frenzy.
