“We’ll deal with that later. Let’s go.” Grabbing her carry-on, he stepped out and strode to the elevator. Delighted to have him with her again, she didn’t protest but locked the door and followed him.

Comfortably sitting next to him, she readjusted her bun. “You’ve been very busy. A lot of work?”

“You can say that. I had a client from Atlanta who spent a day training on new software, a local one who bought more programs, and I decided on a boat.”

“A boat?”

“A forty-foot beauty, with three cabins. You’ll love it, but I won’t finalize the sale until you and the boys see it.”

Her pulse raced with joy. Was she that important to him?

When they arrived in Miami, he dropped her in front of the terminal. “I’ll see you on the plane.” He left to park his car.

She went through passport control and security, then headed to the crew lounge, and later joined her team to board the plane.

Two hours later, the plane hadn’t moved, and the captain announced for the second time. “We have some minor problems that the experts are fixing. Please stay in place. We will take off soon.”

Madison did her best to reassure her passengers, the most nervous one being Rick. He checked his watch for the twentieth time.

“I’ll miss my train to Geneva for sure… The kids will be frantic. They’ll think I forgot them.”

“Relax.” She remained next to him, trying to comfort him.

“If there’s a problem with the engine, wouldn’t it be safer to change planes?”

“There are no problems with the engines. A toilet in Economy is not flushing. They’re working on it.”

His eyes rounded. “You must be kidding me,” he fumed. “We’re delayed because of a toilet? This is unacceptable.”

She shrugged. “You wouldn’t want to be stuck in a toilet that’s not flushing.” She chuckled. “Or sitting in the back against its wall.”

But he was too anxious for her joke. To help him relax, she brought him a scotch on the rocks.

“Don’t worry. The pilots plan to make up for the lost time. We’ll arrive on time.”

At that moment, the captain announced, “The problem is fixed, and we’re ready to leave. We have a full plane. Please, buckle your seat belt. Flight attendants return to your seats for take-off.”

The plane taxied on the tarmac, lined up behind others, and increased its speed on the runway for takeoff.

Madison served Rick his appetizers, wine, and dinner ahead of the other passengers to allow him to relax, and then fixed his bed. Still too nervous, he didn’t protest when she brought him a strong after dinner drink. Ten minutes later, he was sleeping like a baby. She didn’t wake him for breakfast, and he finally called her when the captain announced they would be landing in half an hour.

She stood next to his bed as he straightened up. “I can’t believe I slept. Did you put drugs in my drink?”

She laughed. “Don’t be silly. You should be happy we’ll be arriving early enough for you to catch the first train to Geneva.”

“You’ll come with me?”

“No, I’m too tired. I’m going to the hotel and will sleeptill tomorrow.” She removed the sheets, blanket, and pillows and adjusted his seat. “I suggest you exit the plane ahead of everyone. I’ll signal to you as soon as I open the door. Go straight to the Charles de Gaulle Airport train station. You can board the TGV high speed train.”

“Thanks.”

“Do you want something to eat now?”

He shook his head. “I’ll have breakfast on the train.”

After they landed, she addressed the passengers on the mike. “Welcome to Paris and the Charles de Gaulle Airport. The time is 9:00 a.m. Please remain in your seat until the captain turns off the seatbelt sign.”
