Taken aback, Madison blurted, “What case? We’re dealing with small children, not delinquents.”

“These students attacked their classmates and hurt them, drawing blood.”

“They hit me first, on my head,” Michael shouted. “They called me bad names.”

“Chill out, buddy. We’ll hear what they have to say and what you have to say. I’m sure Dr. Sayers is a fair man. He can’t accuse you when you’re the victim.”

“Not victims for sure. Other kids saw Michael pummeling his classmate.”

“We need to hear from all the kids before we can decide who’s at fault,” she retorted with a calm that had the principal glaring at her.

“You will hear them all right, and these boys will be dismissed. Follow me to the conference room.”

Over my dead body. Rick’s boys were too dear to her heart.

Chapter Eleven

Holding Mark and Michael by the hand, Madison followed the principal. Inside the conference room, two sets of parents framed their boys, while two other men sat at the conference table.

“Have a seat, Ms. Howell.”

She sat with Mark on her left and Michael on her right.

“These are Mr. and Mrs. Sanders and their son, Cody, and Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, and their son, Randy,” the principal declared.

The two boys had their hands on the table and band aids adorned their fingers, chins, and temples. It looked as if Mark and Michael had been involved in a bloody fight.

Madison suppressed a groan. How was she going to get her young friends out of this mess?

“Go ahead, tell us what happened, Cody?”

“Michael called me a nasty liar and pushed me, then he and his brother hit me. I fell. It hurts a lot,” he whined and lifted his hands to show his injury.

Madison pressed Mark and Michael’s hands and whispered, “Quiet.”

“Your turn, Randy. Tell us what happened,” Dr. Sayers repeated.

Randy lowered his head and pouted. “What Cody said. Michael and his brother hit me. I fell. Mark ran away.”

“These two boys are trouble,” Mr. Sanders said. “They have to be punished and expelled.”

“I agree.” Mr. Anderson nodded.

“Well, you heard them,” the principal started.

Madison raised a hand. “To be fair, Dr. Sayers, we need to hear from Michael. Go ahead Michael, look at Dr. Sayers, so thathe can see your eyes and know you’re telling the truth. Tell us your story, and I want the whole story.”

Michael opened his eyes and looked straight at the principal. “When I came to class this morning, Randy threw two paper balls at me with bad words.”

“What words?” Madison interrupted.

“Butt muncher … Dickhead … Dirty foreigner…” Michael put his hand in his pocket and took out the paper balls.

“You wrote this. Not me,” Randy barked.

“Yes, you,” Cody added.

The principal took the papers. “Mr. Scott, keep these.” He gave them to the young man at the end of the table. “Continue your story, Michael.”
