Viviana was wearing pale pink scrubs and matching sneakers. Immediately he grinned and picked up his pace a bit. Even though he knew it was her, he still asked, “Viviana?” when he reached her.

Her friend ran off with a wave, but no introduction. “Hi, Chris. Thank you for the coffee,” she said softly as he handed it to her.

His heart started racing and not just because this would be his third cup of the day. “You’re welcome. I’m glad we could make this happen. Do you have a few minutes to hang out?”

“I sure do,” she said with a soft smile. “Follow me, I’ll show you where I go take my little breaks.”

It didn’t feel awkward at all, other than the fact he was in his uniform, looking fairly official. He noticed a few people stare and check them out as they walked through the lobby, then down a short walkway of floor to ceiling windows which opened up into a lounge area, much like an atrium. The view of the mountains from the room was spectacular, and there was comfortable seating scattered throughout the large room. Viviana led him to a couch by the windows, and waved for him to sit.

“This is pretty nice. Doesn’t have a hospital feel at all,” he remarked.

“That’s why I like to take breaks here. It’s nice to see the view, and just chill out for a bit . . .” She paused. “So, uh, how is your day so far?” It was early afternoon, so they’d both been working for a good portion of the day already.

Viviana sat down next to Chris on the couch and crossed her legs under her before taking a sip of her coffee. She let out a little moan that had Chris shifting in his seat.

“Pretty boring to be honest,” he said on a chuckle. “What about you?”

“It’s been steady, but nothing too exciting to report,” she replied.

Chris decided to cut any tension which might be there since they didn’t know each other well yet. “So, I know this is a little awkward . . . but getting our first meeting out of the way with something we both love seemed to be the best way to start getting to know each other. What do you think?”

Viviana grinned. “I completely agree. I have to admit, I’m a little out of practice in the getting to know you game.”

“You’re not the only one.” He laughed again, not nervously, but comfortably. That’s when he realized what the “something about her” was; she was comforting to be around. He wondered if she knew that about herself.

He decided to just go for it. “So, would you like to have dinner with me?”

Viviana glanced at him over her cup as she took another sip of coffee. She swallowed, which seemed sexy to him . . .How is that sexy? Everything she does is sexy. Jesus.

“I think I’d enjoy that. When would work for you?” she asked.

“Tonight.”

Her eyes widened. “Tonight?” she repeated.

Chris leaned in close, and she mirrored his actions hesitantly, leaning in as well so they were just a few inches apart. “Yes, tonight,” he whispered. “I have a feeling about this . . . I can’t quite describe it, but you feel it too, right?”

Viviana licked her lips before she replied, nearly sending him into cardiac arrest. She nodded, then replied, “I do.”

“Then it’s a date,” he said triumphantly, then held his cup up to hers.

Viviana giggled and tapped his cup with hers. “A date,” she repeated.

“I don’t have a lot of time to stay, but how’s your coffee?” Once he knew what her favorite coffee was after their morning chat, he went slightly out of his way to make sure he got exactly what she liked, and it ate up a bit of his time.

“It’s absolutely perfect, thank you again,” she replied.

“It’s my pleasure.” Chris checked his watch. If he wanted to take her out for dinner when they both got done work, he’d need to get back to his patrol sooner rather than later. “I hate to cut this short, can you walk me out? I have to get back. I got a hot date tonight, so I don’t want to get stuck on the job late.”

Viviana giggled, and her cheeks turned the slightest pink. “I can absolutely do that. Wouldn’t want you to be late for yourhot date,” she said as she stood.

They walked side by side out to the parking lot and to Chris’s vehicle in companionable silence. There was heat radiating between them, and Chris was certain they were both feeling it. He opened his truck door and stepped between the truck and the door, pulling Viviana’s free hand to tug her closer.

“This is really forward, but can I kiss you? I don’t think I can wait until tonight . . .” he said softly, standing there in the broad daylight. He didn’t recognize himself; she did something to him, and as much as he didn’t want to leave he absolutely had to get back, but not before touching her just once.

Viviana leaned closer, letting him pull her, and smiled. “You can,” she replied.

Chris let go of her hand and snaked his around the back of her neck. He pulled her in for what he expected to be just a taste. A small kiss. But it was so much more. The moment their lips touched, he felt it, and he knew she did too. She gripped his waist with her free hand while he devoured her mouth with his, pressing their bodies together in the greatest first kiss of all time. His tongue slid between her lips and the kiss deepened, Viviana receiving and giving back everything Chris did. A perfect fit.
