Sophia knew those vampires were about to rip into her parents. If they hadn’t already. Without giving it a second thought, she jumped from her hiding spot and charged toward them. If she could do anything to help her parents, so help her, she would.

Fey didn’t train for battle. They didn’t believe they needed to. Winning in a fight against these vampires seemed like a long shot, but Sophia would be damned if she didn’t try.

“Ma, Dad!” Sophia called out, picking up speed with every passing second. The fey couldn’t do much, but they sure could run.

Upon hearing her voice, they looked in her direction, their eyes widening with fear. Forher.“Sophia, no!” Her father pleaded a moment before the vampire standing above him slammed a foot into his head, rendering him unconscious.

No…

Sophia didn’t know what she was going to do, all she knew was that she had to do something.

So she did, ramming her small body into the vampire that had just knocked her father out. Caught off guard, he went spiraling to the ground.

But, faster than Sophia had seen anyone move before, he jumped back onto his feet, licking his blood stained lips as he said, “A fighter? I might have some fun tonight yet.”

Sophia didn’t even see him move until it was too late. Before she knew what had happened he was behind her, entrapping her in his tight hold.

Impossible.

Save my parents, she thought, desperate not to give up.For them. So she threw her head back, hearing athudwhen it rammed into his face. He released her in an instant.

“Bitch!”He yelled as she spun around to face him. He had a hand pressed against his nose as blood gushed from it. “Get that bitch!”He commanded the two others, wrath contorting his features until he looked exactly like the monster he was.

Before Sophia knew what was happening, she felt pressure against the side of her head as an unseen fist smashed into it and sent her flying to the mud below. Before she could push herself off the ground she was kicked in the gut.

Then her ribs.

Her collarbone next.

There were too many of them. She didn’t stand a chance. She couldhearher bones cracking.

By the time the world around her began to fade, she was ready for it to fade into nothing, eagerfor it.

“This one’s a fighter.” One vampire commented. “She’ll be too much to handle. We’re better off killing her now.”

“Then…. hurryup!” She said, choking on the blood pooling in her mouth when she did. A blow to her jaw made sure she wouldn’t speak again.

Death couldn’t come soon enough.

Then, through all the madness, she heard someone call for her. “Sophia!”

She couldn’t see beyond the swelling of her eyes, but she knew that voice well enough to know Casper was here.

And then she was lifted into strong arms.Casper’sstrong arms. “I’m getting you the fuck out of here.”

But her parents were nearby, their bodies too battered to move. She couldn’t leave without them! She’d rather stay.

How could she tell him when her jaw was broken?

Panicking, she squirmed in his hold, moving whatever body parts she still could.

He misread her panic. “Stay with me, Soph.Please.”

Suddenly, the world around her fell silent, the scent of burning wood gone.

She wasn’t in Trim anymore, she knew this. Casper split her away from there. But, not knowing who her parents evenwere, he split her away from them too.

If she could justtellhim, then he could split them to safety as well.
