“You alright?” She quirked a brow.

Rubbing the back of his neck he told her, “Just nerves, I guess. Tournament starts tomorrow. Now, what information do you have for me?” He coughed into his hand as he worked to regain his composure.

“Well that’s just it. It’s nottomorrowwe have to worry about. It’stonight.”

“I’m not following.”

“Over one hundred unnatural beings will be brought into the arena tonight to be introduced to the crowd during the opening ceremony.” He knew this. “But unlike previous years, not everyone will walk out of that arena alive tonight. Over half of us will be killed in a free for all that won’t be announced until the moment before it happens.”

Ah, fuck. He hoped this wasn’t true. Not for his sake. He’d be fine. Forher sake. For some reason he couldn’t understand, he didn’t want her dying tonight. If she was speaking the truth, she wouldn’t live through tonight.

If she was right, how the hell did she acquire such serious information?

“The fighting won’t be called off until less than one hundred of us are standing.” The fear in her eyes told him she didn’t believe she’d live through the night either.

“Shit.” He scratched his head. If he wanted to stay true to the deal he just made with her, he’d have to watch over herduring tonight’s free for all. Watching his own ass was one thing. Watching over both himselfandher would be risky. He wasn’t exactly sure if it was a risk he was willing to make. One mistake and Giselle was lost to him forever… “How do you know this?”

“That’s neither here nor there, just promise me you won’t tell anyone else about this.”

He groaned in frustration, wishing he knew how she acquired insider information so he could utilize it for himself.

And as for his deal with Sophia? He wouldn’t stick with it. He had always been a man of his word. Tonight he wouldn’t be. He refused to risk Giselle’s second chance at life - a life withhim- by protecting someone he only just met.

“Telling anyone would only put me behind, and I want to be ahead.” Like hell he’d tell anyone else.

She nodded, seeming to believe what he told her. She had no reason not to. “It’s a shame the full moon isn’t for a few nights. I heard you wolves get a bit stronger during the full moon. It would’ve helped.”

Yeah, except his beast rose whether there was a full moon or not.All that blood on his hands…

“You don’t want to be around a wolf during a full moon. Be grateful you aren’t sharing a battlefield with one.”

She shrugged. “Whatever, wolf. See you in an hour.”

“See you in an hour,” he muttered, watching her backside as she strode away, his heart beating wildly at the sight.

“I didn’t think a fey with that personality existed. Something surprises us every day, I guess.” Lance came to his side.

“Surprise is an understatement.” His world being turned on its head sounded much better.

“Are you going to keep to your word with her?”

“Not a fucking chance.”

Antonio couldn’t understand the disappointed look in his friend’s eyes.

Chapter Thirteen

Sophia Brenning

Sophia stared ahead of her at the sole entrance to the arena’s lower tunnels, tunnels that led directly to the fighting pit. The entrance seemed to look back at her, almost tauntingly. Competitors of all species walked inside, none of them having any idea what surprise awaited them on the battlefield tonight.

But she knew.

She wasn’t entirely sure if Antonio would help her in there tonight, but she had to hope he would. For the first time since she signed up for The Elaron Games, she began to doubt her abilities.

“Soph,” Casper’s voice rang in her ears.

Not looking away from the entrance that loomed in front of her, she told him, “If you’re here to argue some more, I don’t want to hear it.” Now was definitelynotthe time for that.
