“I told you who I’m trying to save. My parents. It’s only fair that you tell me too. I mean, I probably won’t live through the night, so what’s the harm in telling me?”

She almost believed she saw him tense even more. “I told you I’d help you tonight.” His stare remained on the field, his voice lacking emotion. Despite his lack of interest in their conversation, shecouldtake what he said as a good sign. Couldn’t she?

“But will you?”

He was quiet for a moment, a moment that seemed to last forever in Sophia’s mind. “I’m trying to save my mate.” He answered her first question, but ignored her second.Definitely not a good thing. “She died about two centuries ago.”

“How?”

“Escaping me,” he darkly replied.

Well that was discerning. A werewolf’s mate tried to escape him? That didn’t sound right. Werewolves were frightening and aggressive, but they weren’t known to bring harm to their mates. Ever.

If his mate chose to run from him… Maybe Sophiadidmisjudge Antonio.

“Why was she trying to escape you?”Please tell me something I want to hear.

He finally drew his attention to her, his expression grim. “She was taught to be scared of me. So she was. She was from a different species.”

She let out a relieved sigh, though it was slight. “Why the hell did fate pair you with someone other than a werewolf?” That didn’t seem fair.

He scoffed. “The hell I know.”

“Fate’s a bitch sometimes.” Sophia almost believed his eyes softened, even if only for a second.

“She certainly is.”

“I’m sorry that happened to you.” She really was. Werewolves were known to be extremely dedicated to their mates, often following them in death. It was incredibly unusual that he was still living.

The gate in front of them began cranking open.

It was almost time.

Time to die?Sophia nervously wondered.

“Sorry? Don’t be.” He looked back out to the field, his body tensing once more, revealing the sharp curves of the muscles in his arms. “I’ll have her back soon enough.”

The sheer determination in his voice was enough to give Sophia the answer she was looking for.

He would stop at nothing to win his mate back.

Which meant she couldn’t trust Antonio. She needed to heed Casper’s advice and stay as far away from the wolf as she possibly could.

Somehow, Sophia had to survive tonight on her own.

Chapter Fifteen

Sophia Brenning

Antonio prowled forward as soon as the gate that had been slowly opening groaned to a stop. He didn’t hesitate, not stopping for a second to give Sophia one last look before walking out onto the battlefield.

Without her.

So much for her bright idea to procure his help tonight. Antonio definitely wasn’t in any mood to help someone else in this tournament.Especiallynot some woman who wasn’t his mate.

Sophia recalled the way his eyes darkened when he spoke of his mate. It had Sophia wondering what had been going through his head when she kissed him. No wonder he had looked so guilty after the act. He must’ve been miserable, hating himself for betraying the mate he lost.

Sophia felt deflated, embarrassment rocking her.
