Casper nodded.

Shit.

How long was she out for? Everyone back in the town must’ve already found their teammates! The only immortals left would be the ones no one wanted! She wassoscrewed.

Casper must’ve noticed her panic, because he told her, “Relax, Sophia. You have a team.”

“How?” Sophia asked as she worked on settling her rapidly beating heart. Eyeing him curiously, she asked, “Did you pick a team for me?”

“Yes, I did. I asked that wolf… er, Antonio… to team up with you.”

Her heart rate returned to normal. This wasn’t bad news. In fact, this was good news. Why did Conall act as if Casper was going to say something terrible? Antonio was an incredible fighter and he would be a strong teammate. Though, Sophia was slightly confused. The last she spoke to Casper about Antonio he warned her to stay away from the werewolf, claiming he was incredibly dangerous. She couldn’t help but wonder where his change of heart stemmed from.

“I thought you didn’t like him.”

“He’s not going to hurt you. I saw how he protected you tonight. I don’t believe he’s a danger to you.”

Sophia’s heart skipped a beat when she was reminded of the way Antonio came to her aid earlier, the simple thought of him was affecting her more than she wanted it to.

“Clearly,” Conall laughed, clearly still intently listening to their conversation. Unfortunately for Conall, he wasn’t going to get the show he was expecting. Despite the poor reaction they seemed to have expected, Sophia wasn’t upset with Casper. In fact, she felt quite grateful toward him at the moment.

“I’m not sure why you were so scared to tell me this. You know I’m friendly with him. And he’s a great fighter. Teaming up with him is agoodthing. Thank you, Casper.” She may have gotten frustrated with Casper often, especially recently, but he was still a good man. A good man who was good to her. Always. He cared about her, and his actions continued to prove so to her.

Now all he needed to do was openly accept that the two of them would be good together. They fit, it was as simple as that. Judging by how much he seemed to care about her wellbeing while she participated in this tournament, she was beginning to believe he might finally understand how good the two of them would be as a united pair.

She tried to hide her smile as she began playing with her now messy braids. She couldn’t stop herself from imagining a future with him.

“But he asked for something in return,” Casper spit out those words so quickly she almost missed them.

She could hear Conall let out a heavy breath, as if he was watching a movie and the best part was about to happen.

“He asked for something in return?” Sophia tried not to sound upset but failed terribly. It hurt her to know Antonio needed something in return for helping her. They were friends… sort of… weren’t they? At least, she thought they were. She was obviously wrong. If he cared for her the way she was beginning to think he did, he wouldn’t have requested anything in return for helping her stay alive a bit longer.

Sophia worked on keeping herself composed. She shouldn’t be upset about this. Antoniodidalready have a mate. He admitted so to her. Of course he didn’t care about Sophia’s safety, because Sophia needed to die for his mate to live. It was a dark reality she didn’t exactly want to accept, but a reality nonetheless.

She didn’t need Antonio’s approval. She had Casper, after all. And Casper was currently doing everything in his power to keep her alive. Maybe Casper finally returned to Elaron - toher- for good.

She didn’t want to become too hopeful, but a future with Casper was beginning to look a lot less like a fantasy and more like a realty.

“What did he ask for?” Though she tried convincing herself that Antonio didn’t matter to her, she was still desperate to know what her life was worth in his eyes.

Casper swallowed so hard Sophia could see it. “He asked for you.”

That didn’t make much sense. Her life was worth… herself? “I’m not following.”

Casper looked up to the ceiling as he uncomfortably shifted his feet. “You’re going to be staying with him for the remainder of the tournament.”

Sophia’s hands dropped to her sides. “Still not following.”

Casper hissed as he found the courage to look directly at her again, his eyes glistening. “Antonio will only keep you alive if you stay in his tent with him until The Elaron Games are over. You need to live with him for the next week or so.”

“You mean… like to sleep in that tent with him instead of in my room?”

“Yes.”

Sophia shook her head in disbelief. Her hope for a relationship with Casper, the hope that had been building in her mind during their conversation, seemed to crack, scattering into a million pieces. If Casper felt for her the same way she did for him, he wouldn’t even think about sending her off tolivewith another man.

Her heart twisted.
