“Oh.” She heard stories about the full moon. It was said a wolf’s primal needs would take over - primal needs like claiming his mate - controlling his actions for the entirety of the night, possessing him with an uncontrollable animalistic ferocity that would not tamper down until the rising of the sun. “So thestories are true?” She swallowed. The full moon was only a few nights away.

“Depends what stories you’ve been told. But you can trust that I’d never hurt you. Werewolves don’t hurt their mates. Ever.”

“I know.”

His body seemed to relax slightly. “Good. Now close your eyes.” She did as she was told. When he began massaging her scalp, lathering her hair with warm water, her eyes grew hooded. Why did this moment feel soright. “Any other questions? I’ll answer them to the best of my ability.”

“Hmm…” She was so relaxed she couldn’t remember why she even needed any questions answered in the first place. Her earlier worries were washing away.

“You’re going to want to start asking them soon.BeforeI get to scrubbing your body.”

“Why’s that?” She yawned.

“Becausequestionswill be the last thing on my mind by then. And I’m going to make sure they’re the last thing on yours.” His shaft jerked, prodding against her as if to warn her of what was to come. She shivered, her body thrumming with excitement.

It was becoming increasingly difficult to gather her thoughts together, but somehow she managed. “Earlier, you told me you caught onto my scent the day we met. Did I… do I smell the same as her?” Sophia hated thinking her scent might remind Antonio of his first mate. The last thing Sophia wanted to be was a reminder of that woman.

“Nothing about you reminds me of her. Not even your scent. They’re not even remotely alike.”

“So if our scents are so different how did you recognize I was your mate?”

“It’s difficult to explain. Your scent called to the beast inside me and I followed it. Since then it’s been difficult to focus on anything but you every second of the day.”

“What do I smell like?”

“Like the ocean at daybreak.”

Like the ocean. She liked the sound of that. Considering her room in the palace had an ocean view, the sea had grown to be a part of her over the years. “I like that. I love the ocean.”

“Hmm, do you? Good to know.”

When he started running his thumb in circles over the side of her face she found herself leaning into it. “So, if I’m actually your mate-”

“You are.” His quick response was stern, as if he was tempting her to dare question it again. She decided it was probably best that she didn’t.

“What’s going to happen on the full moon? It’s only a few days away. I know things…happenwith your mate on those nights.” Was she mentally orphysicallyready for what that night would entail? She knew it would be intense. She also knew she was still a virgin.

How would her body handle it?Couldher body handle it?

“Don’t worry yourself over that. At least, you don’t have to worry aboutthisfull moon. I’ll figure something out for this one.”

“What are you going to figure out?”

“Just trust that I will.” He became very still, his tone grave. “Promise me you won’t allow the full moon to take up any more of your thoughts. Can you do that for me?”

She could hear the desperation in his voice. For some reason, whether or not she worried about the matter affected him greatly. “I won’t. It’s not like I’m gonna run from you or anything.”

“That’s exactly what I’m worried about.” He sighed against her as he reached for a bar of soap, running it along her shoulders.

She hated knowing this fear of his most likely originated from him being hurt by someone in his past, and she had a pretty good idea who that someone was.

His mate. Hisfirstmate.

At the thought of that woman, jealousy flared within Sophia. Because of his first mate, Sophia could never truly be his. The more her feelings for Antonio grew, the more her heart ached.

She really was doing a shit job at protecting her heart around him, wasn’t she?

But then Sophia remembered something Antonio once told her and a renewed sense of hope lightened her mood.
