“Now there’s the Maya I know and love. I thought I lost you there for a second,” Sophia commented.

“Don’t count yourself so lucky.” Despite her sour tone, Maya was smiling when she walked away.

Antonio shivered at the possibility of competing against her. He had no idea what she was capable of. He only prayed Sophia would no longer be participating in The Elaron Games by the time it came down to that. Though, based on the update Casper gave Antonio yesterday, things weren’t looking promising.

Another worry to add to the list.

Antonio looked at Sophia a second longer, his heart twisting, before making his way outside.

Today marked the first day of individual battles, which meant Antonio couldn’t help her on the battlefield anymore. He could do nothing but watch and hope that she was capable of defeating her opponents, whoever they may be.

On top of everything, he had to worry about the full moon, which wastonight.Antonio couldn’t decide what should worry him more - the battle she was bound to fight or the inevitable rising of his beast.

I’ll tack those worries onto the list.

Chapter Forty-Three

Sophia Brenning

Sophia could feel the tension radiating off Antonio as she made her way to the arena, Antonio trailing behind her.

She hissed a curse. He hadn’t paid much attention to her the past two days, his mind constantly somewhere else. Wherever that was, she hadn’t a clue. So why was he acting like he suddenly cared about her when she had obviously been the last thing on his mind lately?

“You don’t have to follow me, team challenges are over. It’s every man for himself now.”

“Maybe while in the arena, but not while you’re out here. You have me out here.”

Did she though? It didn’t seem like it, not since the dramatic show she put on over Giselle.

Couldn’t hide my jealousy if I tried.

The fact that Antonio planned to use that wish for himself and not her parents seriously pissed her off, but her freak out had everything to do with her untamed jealousy.

“It doesn’t feel like I have you,” she openly admitted. There was no point in hiding it. “Not anymore.”

“I’m not the only one who has been distant.”

This was true. Rage fueling her decisions, Sophia had initially ignored Antonio, though he certainly didn’t make it difficult todo so. He didn’t seem to care that she had stormed off, making no attempt to see what was wrong with her.

Gods, thinking back to it, she deserved an apology! Couldn’t he see how him choosing Giselle over her parents was the same as him choosing Giselle overher? Wasn’t that so abundantly clear?

Not so clear to him.

Maybe he changed his mind about Sophia after she had lashed out? She could almost understand if he decided someone like Sophia was too much to deal with, especially when compared with another fey. The fey were known to avoid conflict and strive for peace. It only made sense that Giselle would have been the same.

Why would anyone choose a short tempered fey over an amicable one?

Maybe my temper is the reason Casper never wanted me.Sophia frowned at the thought, convincing herself she overreacted the other day.

But if she hadn’t, who would’ve defended her? Who would’ve defended herparents?

No one. Sometimes, her loud mouth was necessary. If Antonio didn’t like that particular trait of hers, it meant he didn’t likeher.

Confidence returning, she said, “I might have been distant, but I was upset.Youupset me. Because you were wrong. Youarewrong, and I hate that you can’t see how wrong you are.”

“Sophia…”

She shook her head, continuing her march toward the arena, which she was approaching far too quickly. That Colosseum-like structure looked so much more haunting today than it had any of the previous days.
